The thing with all blizzard games is: They focus on the multiplayer / esport / competition thing. So if you really want to focus on what they focus the article is correct.
Be it hardcore diablo on highest levels, 1on1s since Warcraft2/Starcraft, Mythic raiding, non-random PVP....

But they always add campaign, map editor, random team, custom games, leveling, professions... all things to not exclude anyone. But always with the goal to bait them into the highest level they develop on.

Valve made $221 million last year from csgo.
    Mostly from item sales.

The trick is to have a freemium model.

You see, in a game like LoL a dedicated minority is in fact responsible for the majority of the revenue, that's why the game is so good, they can ignore the concerns of people who suck at it. Get good or get rekt, no handholding and dumbing down so you can feel like you're actually good even though you suck.

I've been saying it for years, let me pay a 100 bucks a month to keep the entitled casuals out of WoW.
