I hate people who say Godwin's Law

I dislike people tossing it out there as well. Most the time I think people use Nazi/Hitler in their discussion because it is the mutually universal relative knowledge of what happened. If you try to compare someones actions say to events in the war of 1812 I don't expect everyone to have a basic understanding of the characters and events in that event in history. Whereas Nazi Germany is so ingrained in parody, satire, documentaries, references it really isn't running out of things to say its merely going to an extreme comparison or relating to an event in history where you would have to have lived under a rock to not know the basics in that part of history.

Godwin's law stands because inevitably someone will degenerate a conversation into comparisons to Nazi Germany. If you hate Godwin's law it isn't because Godwin's law is wrong you just hate it because you keep refering everything to Nazi Germany. It is like people who frequently break the law tend to hate cops. The cops are just doing their jobs, if you would stop breaking the law they would stop arresting you.

Comparing things you don't like to Nazi's is a diservice to anyone who ever suffered under Nazi Fascism, a suffering that you can't possibly understand because you as so far removed from that time period and chose to remain ignorant as to the actual suffering that occured. I'm sorry but Liberals wanting more pay or conservatives wanting bathroom laws is not equivalent to gasing millions of jewish families and ripping their teeth out for gold and using their hair to stuff couch pillows.

Its mostly just a joke/observation. Hitler and Nazi behaviors are a very clear examples of morally abhorrent behaviors that almost everyone agrees are immoral. Thus, they are handy to reference when in debate, because of their infamy.

Godwin himself said, "If you’re thoughtful about it and show some real awareness of history, go ahead and refer to Hitler or Nazis when you talk about Trump. Or any other politician." So, if anyone claims they won the debate merely because you mentioned Hitler, tell them "LRN2GODWINSLAW nub."
