Cool vid of Falcon 9 landing from orbit

    I love this video:

This was yesterday's landing, from the THAICOM 8 satellite launch, which went to GTO. This is now 3 successful landings on the droneship in a row. I recall after the first landing, the commentary was "maybe it was just a fluke and they got lucky." I think after 4 successful landings, 3 in a row, it's safe to say it's not just a fluke.

Next milestone must be relaunch of a used rocket. Then maybe relanding of a relaunched rocket.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

That's pretty fucking amazing. If it wasn't for the fact that the waves are obviously moving forward through time, it almost looks like just rewinding the video of a rocket launch.

EDIT: Also I love that explosion of condensation as it hits the atmosphere. That looks cool. You never see that in space movies.

    Bullshit, it's obviously reversed!

Anyway, am I the only one amazed by how fast it went from space to the ocean?

^I'm guessing it either uses a combination of gyroscopes and maneuvering thrusters that are coordinated by state of the art on-board computer systems... or wizardry.

The video is obviously sped up at some points. If it was going that fast it would have melted.

^^ It's just disappointing because as a child you expected vehicles capable of that to look like Star Wars style space ships, or flying saucers, and not conventional rockets.

It's still early in the 21st century! IIRC, even the first warp ship made by Zefram Cochrane was launched on a rocket.

That I can buy though because in the Star Trek universe there's a huge differentiation between warp drive, impulse drive, and thrusters (and most of the Star Trek ships don't handle well if they are forced to enter a planet's atmosphere, except for the smaller, lighter craft).

The Bajoran's were able to get their jump on the Cardiassian occupiers because they didn't take their "obsolete" ships seriously even though because they weren't designed for deep space travel they had much more robust atmospheric thrusters.

Such a blast watching these launches, but this is just a step beyond that. Awesome video!

Love what these SpaceX folks are doing

Hate to be "that guy", but it wasn't from orbit.

I do agree though, amazing stuff. Can't imagine it's going to be difficult landing the relaunched rocket, but I guess we'll really see if multiple launches cause degradation of them.

The first stage of a rocket that sent a payload to Geosynchonous Transfer Orbit. Semantically close enough.

3 for 3 on a ship, and Lockedout is nowhere to be found.

Well, 3 in a row. It's more like 3 for 6 in drone ship landing attempts.

Elon Musk is simply amazing. He is doing things that other major companies said was simply not possible and the reason why is they can charge more when they do not recycle the rockets. Space X is amazing.
