Libertarians tend to siphon votes mostly from the GOP, so if Gary Johnson became viable, he'd likely hurt Trump and ensure a Dem victory.

In the current system people should not WANT a third party to be actually viable and pull votes from both parties. Why? Because it would cause no candidate to win a majority of electoral college votes and cause the conditions of the 12th amendment to play out. Go read the 12th amendment and come back and realize why that isn't something anyone should want.

Yes, but a 3rd party candidate hasn't won a state since 1968. Now, if a third party candidate won a small state, and the other two candidates divided evenly, suddenly we'd see something crazy like the 12th amendment's election process.

You could see a crazy split like this with no candidate at or above 270:
265-268-5 (New Mexico, the only state GJ really has a chance in)
But it'd be crazy and I doubt the difference in the general will be that small.

Unless you simply have the Republican Party become the third-party, as all of the extremists are concentrated there and the moderates leave to join the Libertarians.

Especially since the Libertarians are the ones who actually care about the small government that conservatives are supposed to champion. Republicans, on the other hand, inflate the government to astronomical proportions any time they are in power.
