    What would you do?

So in Peru there has been a lot of controversy revolving around the construction of a new mining project called Tia Maria in "Valle de Tambo". The project was rejected by the locals of the area under the claim that it would affect their way of living that revolved around agriculture. Despite the rejection of the locals, the goverment decided to approve the project as a safeway to prevent a future stagnation of the economy a prediction that many experts agree with. Needless to say the reaction of the locals wasn't positive, they inmediatly called a meeting with the goverment, the goverment assured that the project was ecological viable according to a study made by the EIA and they were going to be properly compensated. However a leak reached the locals and informed them, that the study did not take into account the impact the project would have in the rivers and the surrounding areas. A strike was called and the locals protested against the project. Months later the company Southern States backed down and the central goverment followed. This happened in 2011.

In 2015, the controversy reignited, as the company presented an updated studio that taked into account the missing factors from before, the goverment indmediatly approved the project and the locals once again demanded meeting with the goverment. The meeting failed as the locals rejected the new study and strikes once again began. This time however they were more violent and the strikes took the life of 3 individuals and hundreds were hurted. The media in Lima accused leaders and members of the strikes of belonging to ex-terrorist group "Sendero Luminoso" and MRTA. The goverment prosecuted many leaders for sever damages to the "Panamericana" highway and interrupting economic activities in the country.

Now in 2016 and with the elections being today, we have two candidates one Keiko Fujimori who has rejected the project and sided with the locals and the other Pedro Pablo Kuczynski who is contemplating the option of resuming the project.

So What woud you do if you had were the man/woman in power?
Before taking a decision consider the following factors

    - Peruvian econonomy is showing signs of stagnation as its main economic activity (mining) its been affected by the drops in prices of copper and zinc
    - The project is still viable despite the drops in prices and would inject the economy with 1.205 billion dollars in addition of other benefits to the economy
    - Regions that do have mining projects generally have better living standards than their neighbours that do not. Despite this they are still among the poorest zones in the country
    - The main benefitiary of the project would be Lima (the capital city of Peru) that contains a third of the population and by consequence the provincias that trade with the city.
    - The company Souther State has a track history of not failing to secure the natural landscape and nature by that matter.
    - Bare in mind that if you approve the project, the use of violence would be needed

I'm sure that the issue is not as black and white as you are presenting it. Why not take some of that 1.205 billion dollars and invest in environmental safeguards, better mining practices, and compensation for the locals?

It would mean less profit but everyone would be happy. Anyway I guess no politician would agree to that, because, well, they're politicians.

It's not that easy though. Since locals are rejecting any proposal.

I don't like Fujimori, so hopefully PPK who appears to have won will do the right thing. I lived in Trujillo (specifically Laredo, Viru, Chicago and also near Merpisa) and I love Peru. I think Peruvians are great, but I do think the government officials can be quite corrupt at times. I hope whatever happens, works in favor of the country and the residents.

    Googled a bit..
Tambo Valley seems to be some beautiful piece of Earth.
Mining pits there, I don't know if one could call that not disturbing.
Plus, it seems they want to mine copper? Not the healthiest mission either.

I think I am siding with the locals.

Depends. I would love to see more excavating of places like Peru. There are tons of ancient structures hidden in the mountains, and tunnel systems under ground.

If this helps reveal structures lost in time, then i'm all about it. But it would be a damn shame to see anything destroyed in the process.
