There is generally a dramatic overestimation of German actual engineering capacities in WW2.

The Germans probelm was if they did continue produse good conventional weapons, they louse, hence to improve Panzer IV was not a option, they was wiped to try to make wunderwaffen....

Counting losses for the Germans is pretty easy - just look at the production numbers. As far as I can tell, pretty much every German vehicle that's not currently in a museum somewhere became a casualty at some point during the war, it's not like there were thousands of tanks that were still being held in reserve by the time of the surrender.

There were quite a few Panzer IV's and Panther's that turned up as fixed fortifications for some middle eastern countries in the 50s and 60s.
