Steam to shutdown CS:GO skin gambling websites.

In the wake of some pretty big controversy within the CS:GO community and YouTube community lately, Valve / Steam has announced they're going to "..start sending out notices to these sites requesting they cease operations through Steam, and further pursue the matter as necessary."

    http://store.steampowered.com/news/22883/

And for people who are unfamiliar with the controversy:

    What are peoples thoughts?

Handful of lawsuits against the sites/valve for facilitating underage gambling, big controversy over youtubers pimping a gambling site that they owned without disclosing in their videos to which some issued non-apologies, various gambling sites getting caught rigging promotional videos and some other stuff.

Definitely scummy. Especially allowing underage people to gamble. Hope Valve can get em shut down nice and quick.

Well, short of requiring some actual form of identification it's hard to effectively age-gate anything on the internet, be it gambling or porn or movies/games etc.

I'm skeptical on the whole, "THINK OF DA KEEDS!" angle of the lawsuits, especially regarding implicating Valve, but the gambling sites have proven to be predictably shady as hell. Shocking, unregulated gambling on the internet is turning out very similar to how unregulated gambling started out IRL.

About time, and finally we'll get actual content back on the CSGO portion of Twitch instead of gambling.

Looking forward to all the QQ

Oh I wouldn't go that far and of course that whole "Enter your birth" crap online is useless. It still is scummy though.

Good. Really positive change. It seems like Valve is taking steps to clean up the major negative aspects of the CS:GO community. It's a little late, but it's still good to see.

Hmm, and i'm waiting to see if any valve employees end up having ties to some of these sites. The whole thing was a shitfest because lets be honest here: until people started to seek legal action over the pushing and predation of children for grey market gambling valve surely knew this was happening and was making them bank with keys for their horrible crate system. This is them covering their own ass at the cost of that revenue but i really wouldnt be surprised to see if they have a few fingers in these pies on the sly themselves. People who treat companies like friends go 'but they wouldnt do that' forgetting how pretty much every big game company has done skeevy shit now and then purely because they think they wont get caught.

Given how deep people are digging after the tmartin stuff i guess time will tell but i really would not be surprised.

On the whole though this shitstorm has been like the pachislot grey market gambling of the west and a blow to it is a nice welcome blow to youtube clickbait and pushing lockbox culture on young kids to 'catch em young' in one swoop which is nothing but a good thing.

Though i'm sure its stuck in Valves craw to do this and look at projections of how many crate keys this costs them.

Good, the big CSGO event in Columbus Ohio a few months back just left a bad taste in my mouth being there for work and not being able to walk 5 steps without some fuck trying to give you a card with their promo(aka referal) codes for these sites.

I'm sure many will, but its going to be a lot harder to catch em young with the screaming head youtuber scams going down the toilet.

I think it's a good thing overall too, which I think is the general consensus. It was incredibly scummy by Syndicate, Tmartin etc, and let alone illegal, to do what they did about their CS:GO skin site.

Imo it also enforces gambling at a young age, which is obviously not a good thing.

EDIT: Also I'm not sure how I feel about Valve about this either. They're only doing it because it could also potentially risk them a major lawsuit too. This whole time CS:GO skin gambling has been around, Valve never gave a shit about it. Only until these scummy bastards were exposed to what they are doing....

Oh, and I also thing the whole ballshit about the OpenID API is a very weak excuse - because they obviously implemented it for a reason and probably knew skin gambling would become a thing.

Iv said it before and ill say it again. Monitizing skins was one of the most cancerous things valve could have done. It killed the modeling and skinning and animation community and left people with just looking at valves default garbage gun models and animations.

You just now figured it out that's what valve does?

They look at things that become popular in gaming and try to monetize it. The real cancer to PC gaming is Valve itself. MS needs to get it's shit together with the windows 10 store because Valve needs competition in the worst way, they're cancer/monopoly with terrible CS and lack of giving a fuck. People overlook it cause steam sale! AKA time to buy a game that's already been cheaper on Amazon or Green Man Gaming months ago.

For everything Valve does that's good like the 2 hour refund system they do 2 things that are shitty and anti consumer. Let's all not forget that they tried to sneak in paid mods in the middle of the good will from the refund system.

Yeah, looking back over Valve's somewhat recent history and their business motives and decisions, it really just makes me sigh.

At least the Valve circlejerk doesn't seem as intense here as on reddit. On reddit, you can't question crooked Gabe, or Valve, or any of the other "PC Master Race Gods" without being completely annihilated by downvotes.

Valve has gone to shit. Gabe is obsessed with "capitalism ho" to the point where several notable franchises have effectively withered and died in the pursuit of cheap, easy money. Sanctioning gambling is only another step in a line of ever increasing greed, and the only motivation for this change is public outcry - nothing else. It's no different than paid mods that crooked Gabe tried to shove down our throats.

Oh its been since about 2006 that i thought valve was a good company. They built a decent platform but they pretty much ceased being a game devloper around that year. Re skinning CS into CSGO proves that.

I wonder if this will carry over to games that have digital TCGs or booster pack type items.
