Building a computer, no idea what parts to go with...

I'm looking to build a new home media server but not really sure what to get for parts.

    Budget
    $1000 CAD

    Resolution
    1080p

    Games / Settings Desired
WoW and Civ are really the only games I play on my computer, high to ultra, min 45 fps (currently getting 20 on medium-low settings)

Any other intensive software or special things you do (Frequent video encoding, 3D modeling, etc)
LAN media streaming, plex, video transcoding, software development

    Country
    Canada

    Parts that can be reused
I have all my peripherals, with the exception of speakers. I can live without speakers for now. I don't want to squeeze them into the budget and affect the quality of the computer. Other than that, I'm currently using a laptop so nothing reuseable.

    Do you need an OS?
    Nope.

I'm not concerned with "future proofing" I can upgrade as I need. I'm also willing to sacrifice my gaming capabilities if it means a better media server experience. I realize transcoding is very cpu intensive so I would prioritize that over gaming. Furthermore this is my maximum budget, but if you can build it for cheaper then great!

    Thanks!

Thanks for the build! Can I ask why you went with the i5 over the i7? I would assume an i7 would be much better at things like transcoding than an i5.

Hey, so I'm going with your build and started ordering the parts. Just a quick question regarding the video card, what kind of performance can I expect in WoW with this? As I said in my OP gaming capabilities aren't my main focus, so I'm just curious.

WoW is majorly CPU dependent. For your budget the 950 should be great
