    Really? Abelist? LOL

Did you just make that word up? Because, it seems like it would be spelled different, were it a real word. Abelist would be like some who chose Cain over Abel.

This is pretty common legislation, cause of accident as distracted due to eating is well known amongst motor insurers.

Yup. This is being fought ferociously by those who care enough to have a voice. The law would be so open ended that you can literally be issued a ticket for changing the radio station.

When questioned, it is to keep up with the upcoming technology such as driver-less cars and such. Which anyone who is listening, could say this is absolute nonsense. Even the insurance agency's are saying it is bullshit that will not improve anything at all.

It is basically the new "red light camera". Just a new way to make more money for the municipalities.

Also, just to add it. Police would not be held responsible for breaking these laws, they would be exempt, just as they are when talking on their cell while driving.

If this law goes into effect. I call for the removal of all highway billboards, as they are specifically designed to be seen by drivers. They should then be considered as a distraction to drivers, and should be all taken down.

Everything on this page would be made ticketable. And the fines are way too high. Where do we draw the line? You wanna know what causes the most accidents? DAYDREAMING!!!

    You gonna ban that Christie?!
Preach. This law is obviously a slippery slope situation.

Exactly. It is just another money scam from our good ole Soprano State.

    - - - Updated - - -

One more thing. We already have laws that take care of this. "Careless Driving" "Driving in an Unsafe Manner" Both of these already cover distracted driving. So the entire thing is pointless.

Is it though, because distracted driving is already a law on the books.

Exactly. It is such bullshit, and if you have the ability to fight it, I recommend it.

First the gas tax bullshit, and since that got such a horrible approval rating, now this. Whatever they can do to take our money. Money we don't have as this is one of the most expensive states in the country to live in.

I dont want to fight it, people are way more distracted behind the wheel. I see people eating all the time. If you are eating, you are not 100% attentive to the road.

NJ is very corrupt. You have to pay for that corruption somehow. I moved out and I will not return. Since the casinos opened in PA, I now have no reason to visit that god awful state anymore.

While I agree that there are many distractions while driving, from what I heard, the report on how many accidents were caused by distracted driving was actually quite low. So I can't really get behind this law.

You are a wise man. I am attempting to make moves at work to be able to work remotely. I want out of this state as soon as possible.

Not many people are going to admit fault, let alone admit to being distracted.

It isnt just accidents. It is also traffic flow, if you are trying to eat a sandwich and you are driving slow because of it, you are going to cause backups.

I knew I couldnt afford to live in that state when I saw property taxes in the $8k-10k range. I dont know how people can afford it.

It's true. I've tried to eat a quick chek sub while driving, and I couldn't keep it still and drive at the same time.

NJ's Homeowner rate is dropping. Currently, 60% are home owners. And they can't tell exactly how many, but it is assumed that another 10-20% of those homeowners rent the place out. NJ home ownership is pretty terrible, specifically because of the property taxes, and the housing costs.

First of all, talking to your buddy in a car would be hard to enforce, but if a cop sees you turn around to talk to someone in the back seat, they can ticket you for distraction.
Yeah I don't eat fries, cereal or big macs behind the wheel. If I can't eat it with one hand or without looking at it, I just won't order it. Nice try painting me as 'distracted'. Or if I am driving on the highway I just won't eat at all. I don't reach in bags or hold a sub while trying to make sure nothing spills out.

I drink from straws, so my eyes never leave the road.

I don't care if my taxi driver is eating, pilots do eat anyways and Bus drivers shouldn't, but only because where I live, even if they hit you, you are likely at fault.

Which means I am going to be more tired when I drive and if I happen to be running behind, I'm going to speed and cause more accidents. Mmm logic. Not saying you should eat something messy or use 2 hands to eat, but this is getting ridiculous.
You're blaming other people for your bad choices. The only valid response to your argument is to revoke your driving priveleges.

15 years driving, 1 accident over 10 years ago, 0 speeding tickets or moving violations, 0 animals killed, 0 stationary camera red light tickets. Not many people can say the same.

Meh, if that shit comes here, I'm going to start taking pictures of police eating/drinking while driving, or driving with busted head/tail lights, and so on.

Let's all ride the Gish gallop.

Makes sense to have such a law.

meh, on one hand making the roads safer is good, but on the other I sure as hell don't want to give cops more options to "bust" people over trivial things.

To be the conspiracy theorist. Yes it is a law that is trying to cut down on unsafe drivers. People not watching the roads. The conspiracy theory. This might be pushed by insurance companies. More tickets. Reason for them to raise insurance rates.

You've also said you're one cup of coffee away from being a public menace. "I can't be trusted to operate a ton of fast-moving steel unless I'm allowed to drug myself while I do it" isn't a valid argument for blocking a ban on drinking behind the wheel. I'm not the one saying you're a potentially dangerous driver; you are. I'm just pointing out that a more rational response to the threat you made was to revoke your driving privileges, rather than to forego passing the ban.

While I understand the logic behind not wanting people to crash, one has to ask how far are we going to go in regards to regulating every single bit of peoples lives?
