    Crazy! I would think, after so much time underwater, all those statues would have been reduced to rubble...

    Oddly enough, the biggest threat to statues, is running water, which these were protected from by being under water that isn't moving. If the water isn't moving, it doesn't cut away the statue as much. Kinda weird when you think about it.
