It's not sympathy, it's just an account of the other side of the story of the entirety of the cold war. Global pressures, i.e. Russia and the US molding and bending entire populations to their will of global hegemony. This isn't a falsehood, hyperbole, or prejudicial statements that usually incorporate "anti-PC" statements and views.
In Norway we have a name for this, "Hersketeknikk". Translated as "Domination technique".
There is actually a wiki article on this idea, but it's not particularly populated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master...ion_techniques
Basically, "hersketeknikk" is a way to win an argument by going after the person rather than the argument, using underhanded means. Think of it as an effective and slightly different way of doing ad hominem.
The boss to a female employee, 1930s: "You are cute when you try to make a point like a man!"
An argument on health care, 1960s: "Only a communist would support public healthcare, you're not a communist are you!?"
President of the USA, 2001: "You are either with us or against us" (and I must add, his technique largely failed)
A reason given to suppress university speakers, 2016: "You and your platform is supported by misogynistic assholes and must be banned for our safety."
There is no real defence against a "hersketeknikk" except calling it out. I believe the blog post in question does just that. Unfortunately, such a callout is only as strong as the public opinion. And the public opinion is driven by the press most of the time. IMO there are very very few publications that are not either lunatic or terribly biased on at least one subject. I mean, some publications like the Mary Sue or Fox News wear their bias on their sleeves. You know what to expect. But that's not always the case. And amongst the "neutrals", you are rarely going to find true neutrals.

Case in point, the second largest newspaper in Norway ran a story yesterday about some american c-list celebrity apologizing to the internet for dying his hair blonde. The article was reporting how this guy was finally 'fessing up and apologizing for his misdeeds. It wasn't clear to me why this hair dying was such a terrible deed. I don't see it, and the article didn't say. A proper neutral newspaper would at least question that, even if this was in the celebrity gossip section. The journalist failed to report that part - fine, that's a professional mistake. But in doing so, they failed to be the public opinion, and instead joined the lynch mob. They implicitly enforced and supported the "hersketeknikk" used against this c-list celebrity.
And that is IMO deplorable. I would expect Fox News to join the lynch mob against democrats. And I would expect the Daily Show to join the lynch mob against republicans. I also expect both agencies to think twice before joining a lynch mob against the King of Sweden saying something silly about gardening.

Looking at the current heroin/opioid addiction a lot of white working class people have succumbed to and then looking seeing how heroin addiction was treated when it was seen a largely black problem, the difference in how the two epidemics were treated amazes me. Blacks were called junkies, dope fiends, the problem was unsolvable. Now that the same problem affects whites, it's called a "disease" and users are "victims of the disease". Naturally it's getting more money thrown at it.
Isn't this political correctness but reversed a little?
