Why is football popular in the south?

I live in Texas, and football seems to be a way of life here. So, why is it so popular down here?

Well first of all texas is trash. Second of all people all over the united states and other countries enjoy football and sports of all kinds all over the world, its a pretty universal human past time.

Its just a way of life I guess, and I also live in Texas. Was brought up in it by my dad.

You know I really need to research it, because it is crazy just how much of a religion it is here vs other places. My initial guess is that originally it built up because in small rural towns there wasn't much else to do on a Friday night. Then it became my daddy, and his daddy and his daddy played, coupled with beating the rival small town next door.

And in the "Deep South" like Southern Hemisphere.
Football is really popular , with Free to Air TV showing a lot of live games in Australia.
