Big Government interference costing North Carolina $395 million

No one in North Carolina asked for HB2. But the Governor and State Legislature rushed it to law in order to preempt a city ordinance from Charlotte.

By some estimates, HB2 has cost the state $395 million so far.
    Hilights include:
$176,000 in legal fees so far, $47,000 of which is just lawyers for the beleaguered Governor.
In June, the North Carolina legislature approved diverting $500,000 from the disaster relief fund to Governor McCrory’s offices for HB2 litigation.
North Carolinians lost $58.3 million when PayPal and an “unnamed tech company” canceled their planned expansions to the state. Thanks Peter Thiel!
The NBA pulled their All-Star Game $106 million.
The NCAA and ACC pulled their championship games $91.4 million.

All this to stop a city government. A clear example of government overreach.

The people that wrote the law, are the same people that defended Kim Davis. The "Liberty Counsel" were the ones that wrote the law and many like it in 20 other states. Why is it, that whenever you see a group with liberty or patriot or whatever patriotic name they try to make up, does your skin just crawl and say that they are anything BUT what they claim to be? http://crooksandliars.com/2016/04/cb...er-behind-lgbt

It is just like Republicans claim they want more freedom, but they only want freedom for their side, not anyone elses.

this is the bill that screws over transpeople, yes?

don't violate the constitution and you won't have problems.

infringing on people's liberty and pursuit of happiness is violating the constitution.

I hate to say that, but out of those 395 million, there is exactly 176 000$ that possibly be blamed on the gov. The 394.8 millions are....private companies.

(I construct the argument of the OP, and I will gladly correct, that the US federal government contest of the HB2 law is what cost 395 millions)

    Right.

This isn't "oh noes the big bad Fed won't let us do our thing and it's costing us money". This is "oh noes the big bad Fed won't let us do our thing and everyone saw how horrendous our thing was and cancelled stuff that was gonna bring money into our State".

The "big government" that's to blame is North Carolina, here, for trying to infringe on its citizens human rights.

Not just "freedom" but small and unobtrusive government. Yet NC is now policing bathrooms Admittedly North Carolina has been a swing state in some elections, but it is a hypocrisy of the highest order.

Government small enough it fits in your pants -- And then proceeds to drain all Rights when it's not of a specific gender/race/species pre-determined by the aforementioned political affiliation.

"We're going to have to scan your genitals and cross check them with your chromosomes to make sure they match. Then once we've done that, we're going to test your sexual attraction to make sure you're aroused by socially acceptable norms predetermined by our really old book here written a long time ago."

It sounds like a dystopian nightmare, then you realize it's just another conservative state.

The only good thing about this HB2 mess is it clearly shows the lie that conservatives go for around small government.

What this law did was preempt local governments from enacting the laws they thought best for their people -- the very heart of the so-called "small government" conservative model. But when their model was used in a way they didn't like they brought in the big stick of big government to enact their will against the will of the population.

And thus, the conservative hypocrisy is exposed for all to see.

It is most unfortunate that the people in NC not only have to suffer under draconian regressive laws, but then they also have to endure the fallout of the financial impact of the state losing jobs and businesses.
