Not that I believe in "souls" but there is another way of looking at it.

If you see "soul" as "personality", and you take on some of the beliefs of a dead person... say... Einstein (if you learn the same things he has, and understand his ideas) aren't you, in a way, taking on their "soul"? By virtue of a part of that person's personality, is now "alive" in you.

I believe we're more than the sum of our parts and its ignorant to think otherwise. There is an unknown spark that is sentience. Call it whatever you want but it certainly exists. Soul does make me think religious but it needs a name and that fits it. I also believe in the spirit which in my believe is similar but separate from the soul. However I also subscribe to the philosophical idea that the universe did not beget consciousness, but instead consciousness beget the universe and the only thing that is actually exist and above all else is consciousness everything else is just a series of illusions which are an attempt comprehend existence.

I think it's (much) more common in German speaking regions than anywhere else, especially with this spelling.
