High ping while others on internet

I live in a house with three other guys and have been getting from ~500 to 2000 ping when others are using netflix. We pay for 40 Mbps and usually get at least 30 when I do a speedtest. I know WoW and most games typically don't require a very high bandwidth so I would think I should be okay even with people using netflix or something.

Is my speed too low? Could it be that the router is old? I'm hoping that's the problem, we're using a Linksys WRT310N router at the moment.

Any insight would be really appreciated.

You need a router that allows you to set QoS settings. This will let you set priority for certain types of web traffic on certain ports, bandwidth caps for each client, etc. I don't know if your router has that feature.

I actually did that right after I made this post. Roommates just came in a few minutes ago and ping jumped up to 2300. I set WoW as highest priority but still not working well.

Edit: As my ping is at 2300 and others are on the internet I ran a speed test and got 9 mbps.

Speed test is irrelevant in your situation. You need packet priority not bandwidth.

So how can I fix that? A new router? Sorry not too savvy with this.

Netflix eats a very large chunk of bandwidth fyi.

Most routers anymore have a packet priority protocol system in place already.

What most consumer routers don't have, is a way to regulate network traffic control. Example: Give one system 10MB/s, but others 2Mb/s, or children's devices 1Mb/s.

Most priority traffic things use specific packets. So things like Games, and Streaming Media (Twitch, Youtube, Hulu..) share the same priority, as I understand it, so they only get bumped above normal traffic such as web browsing, or transferring files over the network.

    I'm in a similar situation.

My network has around 14 devices, only 4 are LAN.

But I have a tablet, for what ever reason pulls so much data at once, it can crash my network through WiFi. Have not been able to figure out why, or a way to prevent it from doing it.

My router can track which protocols it uses (For which domain; Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Safari, Amazon, etc..), but no matter what , it will just hog the entire bandwidth, and restrict other network connected system out of accessing until it stops. :S

Through researching I see some people who claim that using a dual band router and having everyone else connected to one can fix the issue, gonna look more into that.

If your room mates are bros, you can access each of their PC's and set the connection limit

Network and sharing centre > Change adapter settings > Properties (I think it's the same for wifi)

On win10 there was a bug that connection was limiting itself to 10mbs and as soon as I capped it (doing speedest would cap it) the internet disconnected.

You can also physically limit connection speed for others, if everyone uses wifi while you use wired.
    PM me weird stuff :3

I ended up getting a long ethernet cord and have it going around the living room. Just plugged it in so hopefully I see some improvements!

If you can access your router setting (usually the 192.168.1.1 address), you might have the ability to prioritize your PC's MAC address over other devices. It depends on the router tbh, and I can't speak from experience how much impact it can have.

Using Ethernet over wifi tends to be a good move, when possible that is.
