Angry Germany shootings: Four police officers shot by 'far-right extremist'

Four police officers have been injured, one critically, after they were shot at during a raid on a home in southern Germany.

Public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk reported when the officers entered the home in Georgensgmünd, a municipality in Bavaria, a 49-year-old man "immediately opened fire".

Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann told a press conference on Wednesday that one officer, a Special Deployment Commando, was critically injured in the shooting.

The officer was taken to hospital, where he was operated on, but he remained in a serious condition, Mr Herrmann said.

Another specialist commando was shot in the arm, while the remaining two officers were injured by flying fragments of glass.

The gunman, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was arrested at the scene.

Police found 30 legally-purchased weapons in his home, including hunting weapons, historical weapons and some from America.

German media reported the man was a "Reichsbürger" (roughly translating to "citizen of the Reich") - a right-wing extremist who rejects the power of the current German state.

Mr Herrmann described the shooting as a dramatic escalation, and an event which was unheard of in Bavaria.

He said people should not dismiss the Reich Citizens' Movement as being crazy or crackpots.

"They get bogged down in their ideology. We will do everything possible to protect people against these people," he said.

While some members of the movement could be regarded as right-wing extremists, others were less extreme, Mr Herrmann added.

A police spokesman told daily newspaper Neues Deutschland that the man owned his firearms legally, however he was no longer considered a "reliable" gun owner so local administrators revoked his right to bear arms.

Mr Herrmann said courts and district officials had attempted to contact the man to surrender his weapons but he refused to co-operate.

Officers attempted to seize them on Wednesday morning before they were shot.

Politicians began to speak out in the wake of the shooting, calling for greater action against those who identify as Reich Citizens.

Ulla Jelpke, domestic affairs spokeswoman for the Left Party, said authorities may have underestimated the threat posed by the group.

"The incidents in Georgensgmünd show clearly once again the danger of right-wing extremists and neo-fascists in Germany," Ms Jelpke said.

Markus Rinderspacher from Bavaria's Social Democratic Party said he was appalled and shocked by the "cowardly act of violence".

"What is needed is a crackdown and strict observation of the Reich Citizens' Movement," Mr Rinderspacher said.

"The anti-constitutional attitude of the movement is to be taken very seriously."

Enough is enough. We need a serios crackdown on these villains. They are doing so much damage to the very fabric of society.

Because cracking down on people with lots of guns will calm things right down...

Germany needs better gun control. They need to add deeper background checks and DNA testing.

So correct me if I am wrong here...

    1) German citizen legally obtains weapons,
    2) German citizen becomes upset with the German government,
    3) German government revokes citizens rights because of 2)
    4) German government raids home of 1)
    5) People get shot.

That is what I take away from the article.

You seem to be missing the part of the growing threat posed by right wing extremists. Please explain how we can combat this.

How are they a threat? They were the ones threatened. Please explain this. You're calling them extremists and yet provided no proof. I guess all Muslims are extremists as well.

Dude they just shot 4 police officers. That is textbook extremism. We need to crack down on this type of behaviour not make excuses for it.

You people have a shoot out and no one dies? WTF? How the hell did you almost conquer Europe?

Police found 30 legally-purchased weapons in his home, including hunting weapons, historical weapons and some from America.
The hell difference does that make? Do European guns not shoot bullets? Would explain why you people can't kill anyone in a shoot out......

A police spokesman told daily newspaper Neues Deutschland that the man owned his firearms legally, however he was no longer considered a "reliable" gun owner so local administrators revoked his right to bear arms.
"The incidents in Georgensgmünd show clearly once again the danger of right-wing extremists and neo-fascists in Germany," Ms Jelpke said.
What this clearly shows is that the German government is willing to take personal legally obtained objects away from people at the drop of a hat. He had a right to bear arms until someone felt like he wasn't "reliable." What does that entail? Did he commit a crime? Did he have to many guns? Is there a legal limit? Or is it just one pin head's opinion of how many guns a person should have?

Would he have shot anyone if no one bothered him? Probably not. We have plenty of gun nuts over here that threaten to over throw the government and they don't shoot anyone. All they did was prove his nuttiness and he reacted in the only way he knew. He defended his right to bear arms with force. Luckily no one died.

    Enough is enough.
You use that phrase a lot when something happens that doesn't normally happen. I don't think it means what you think it means.....

The "Reichsbürger" are basically Germany's version of the US Sovereign Citizens ("Am I being detained?").

The police usually is much too nice to these guys and argues with them patiently. They should try their "I'm a free citizen, I can do what I want, your law doesn't apply to me" BS in Russia or North Korea and see how that works out for them.

The so called Reichsbürger are separated in a lot of small isolated groups, totalling not more then a few hundred people (according to the Bavarian minister I think), I doubt they do much damage to the fabric of society.

Sorry, but a squad team just assaulted that citizen, and it does not really state why.

He simply defended himself against an attack from a power hungry state. Unless you can directly say on what grounds they needed to bother the man, who did not shoot anyone not entering his home uninvited. Was he a murderer? Was he a child molester?

Or was he just someone the government did not like.

I don't know the details, but in Germany your gun license is reevaluated from time to time, just like a driving license, and this guy apparently didn't bother to do it. So they had to take away the now illegal owned guns.

The guy is a "Reichsbürger", these people believe that our current federal republic is not legitimated and they see themselves as defenders or the old constitution that lasted till 1937(?). They are very messed up and provoke law executives with minor details over and over again (the muderer here has even a youtube channel where he uploaded these messy videos "frankenfrei"). They are on a complete different level than neo-nazis or right-extremists - they are completely crazy.

But no worries tennis, we will now take serious actions against that group.
