    Upgrade Help

Hey I was looking to maybe upgrade my computer with maybe one expensive piece or two less expensive pieces because I'm starting too see lower fps in newer titles than Id like especially with my 144hz monitor.

    Computer:
    CPU: i7 4770K 3.5ghz
    mobo: Gigabye Z87x-D3H-CF
    GPU: AMD R9 390 8gb
    8gb RAM

Even in WoW I'm only seeing like 80fps in dalaran on preset 6 with some stuff turned down and even lower in raids maybe something is just wrong with a part or would an upgrade help here?

Your CPU and mobo is very good and you dont need upgrade them. You can overclock the i7 3.5ghz to 4.2-4.4ghz or enable turbo boost in bios if you are inexperienced with manual overclock.

you can add 8gb RAM more for 16gb total.

And for WoW an Nvidia card is better than AMD but the r9 390 is a very powerful card anyways. What resolution is your 144Hz monitor? if your monitor is 1440p I recommend upgrade to GTX 1070 but if you have a 1080p 144Hz your r9 390 would run preset 7 perfectly with your computer on 1080p 144hz. Test the SSAO option and disable this, SSAO is not a good option for AMD cards.

Try a clean Windows install with fresh and updated drivers too.

Just 1080p. Overclocking does seem a little more advanced than I'd like to get so maybe ill try that Turbo boost if it is not already on.

I did have that SSAO on ultra apparently disabling it has helped a bit ill test more during raid tonight thanks. I was considering a 1070 maybe Ill get it for the newer titles. Thanks both

WoW hates AMD GPU's, if your main games are blizzard titles and you can sell your 390 for a decent amount even a 1060 will give you gains. Like above, only consider a 1070 for newer titles, but if you can recoup a decent amount for the 390 a 1060 is a good sidegrade for blizz titles.

Isn't that also pretty much a downgrade for everything else though? I mean, the 390 has enough power that even though it will not perform as well as say a 980 in WoW, it should at least match the performance of the 1060. I doubt he would see many gains in WoW dropping down to a 1060 and would certainly see losses elsewhere.

Sure, WoW favors nVidia. But that really only matters when comparing say a 750ti to a 360. Once you have a strong enough GPU, and the 390 is strong enough, GPU doesn't make much difference.

Short answer is you don't need any upgrade. Overclock your CPU for gains in WoW.

390 is not faster than a 1060, even in DX12, where did you get that

    390 is either on par with 1060 or between 970 & 1060 (so 1060 >= 390 >= 970)

    only 390X is = 980 a bit ahead of 1060 .. but not regular 390

but I agree its not worth changing from 390 to 1060 unless you really want to save power and have GPU produce less heat (1060 would consume like close to 2.5-3x less power than a 390)

only a 1070/1080 is an upgrade

    Well, you are kinda right:

At 1080p it is the 390x that is pretty much on par with a stock 1060. At 4k however, it changes and the 390 is on par with the 1060. The 390 actually beats the 980 a 4k as well.

he did specify he has a 1080p monitor ..

and all of those cards give 15-20 fps on 4K maxed out in most modern games, so its pointless to even mention them and 4K in the same sentence

Yes, but if they perform better in 4k now, then in 2-3 years when more demanding games are coming out, which one do you think will perform better?

Also, in most games at 4k they are closer to 25-30...not 15-20.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...Gaming/12.html 29 in DOOM
    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...Gaming/18.html 31 in Just Cause 3
    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...Gaming/22.html 26 in The Witcher 3
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...Gaming/21.html 23 in Rise of the Tomb Raider

All modern games, all higher than your 15-20 fps. When getting that close to 30 FPS with max settings, and knowing you are playing at 4k, you can turn a few pricey settings down and maintain above 30 FPS easily with a 390, better than with a 1060. Which was my whole point. Fascinate actually told him to buy a 1060 to replace a 390, which is a stupid move. Side-grade at best, would not want to spend a few hundred bucks for no gain and in some cases, a loss.

Clearly i was saying only do it he can get a decent amount of money back from his 390, 1060 uses like 1/3rd of the power of a 390 as well dont forget that.
