If the choices available seem equally bad, which is an opinion he's allowed to have, then not voting for either of them is a perfectly valid statement. Doing so increases the number of people who didn't vote, which sends a clear message to both parties, which is that their choices for presidential candidates are horrible, and they need to get their heads out of their asses. It also sends the message that he doesn't believe in the voting process, and feels like it makes no difference who he votes for. This, of course, doesn't make sense to someone who's for either Trump or for Hillary, and of course those people feel insulted because he didn't vote for their candidate.

If a guy thinks the country is in such a state, that he chooses to protest the national anthem, then protesting the horrible candidates by not voting for either of them makes all the sense in the world.

But, again, this is unacceptable for all those people who feel like he should've voted for their candidate.

He started his 'protest' during the Obama presendency, so he was unhappy with the state of things then. Whatever you think about him, not voting for either more of the same or an in his mind probably even less palatable alternative, looks to be congruent with his message.


(I find his behaviour questionable from the aspect that - in my opinion - he gets paid to represent the NFL and the 49ers from the moment he enters the stadium and should leave his political agenda outside. Personally I don't care about the political opinion of celebrities, but they obviously have the right to communicate it.)
