It's a grind because they catered to the "hardcore" crowd who are a severe minority but want to be rewarded for playing 10+ hours each day. Endgame grind models need to die and stay gone.

The grind is necessary as there is a psychological component to the grind that is required for the success and sustainability of the game. The grind is the primary way of programming the mind in order to create an attachment and a sense of purpose within the game. Grinding 30 mobs here and there or picking up 15 pieces of poop over and over again literally grinds the game into your consciousness and develops a dependence to the tasks within the game (humans are primarily programmed by repetition such as developing good or bad habits). You begin to think about things that need to be done and what you need to complete when you're away in the real world. The grind creates the eCrack™ addiction to the game as you are rewarded for completing tasks and these rewards trigger that feeling of happiness inside your pea brain.

The grind permeates the entirety of the game. All aspects of the game including leveling, questing, dungeons, collecting transmogs, pet battles, raids, world bosses, etc. create a sense of purpose and accomplishment within the game.

The grind is important but the quality of the grind dictates whether the xpac will be successful or not and the "Carrot on the Stick" is the key to putting it all together. If the reward for the grind is valued by the general populace, then for the most part ,the xpac will be deemed a success but if it's not (IE WOD), then it breaks the immersion and sense of purpose associated with the xpac and the eCrack™ spell will be broken.

And everyone in this thread: taking the grind part literally and not caring about the joke.

Correct, but not because it was needed or required by every guild, same as the BiS legendaries or high ilvl drops are not required for much of the content nowadays, yet it is a requisite to find groups/guilds as the so perceived DPS your class should do skyrockets due to them.

Because i hope you see how that contradicts the whole "you don't need X if you are not on a top high end guild" which people uses all the time to minimize how people's feelings about what they are suppossed to do.

A grind with no end in sight or complete goal, is what will do to your semi-hardcore, semi-casual crowd for the most part which cannot or do not want to play the game for that many hours.

It is a grind because it is the only reasonable way to have content and not being waiting for raids while watching a table in Frostwall.
