Upgrade PC or New Laptop.. hmmm

Currently housing a desktop PC upstairs in my isolated office with a:

    24" 120hz Acer monitor
    Logitech G15 Keyboard
Logitech G400S Mouse with Roccat Pad
    Logitech G35 Headset
    i5 2500k, 8GB DDR3, R9 290, 250 SSD + 1TB HDD..

Downstairs I have an ASUS X555LA i5 4210U Laptop with 4GB Ram + Intel HD GPU

    Stuck in a dilema.

Do I upgrade my PC or buy a new PC.. or do I buy a beast of a gaming laptop.

I do like sitting upstairs in my own space, dont we all... but I also like to sit downstairs with my partner sometimes too, especially over the christmas period, not nice to be seperated.. especially her.

Fire at me please guys, opinions/advice/suggestions.

I have £1500 to play with

Replace both with a decent gaming laptop but keep all the peripherals to plug in when in the office.

    Edit for suggestions:

As you used a pound sign I'm going to assume you're in the UK so, as a starting point maybe take a look at:

I do not suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Sadly I still strongly believe that's a waste of money unless you strictly need the portability of a laptop. You'll always pay more and get less with a laptop (slowly becoming less true) but you can't get a desktop CPU in a laptop.

To the OP, honestly it's up to what you need? If you don't need the portability of a laptop then definitely desktop.

Was just going to add, the other option of upgrading the desktop could be to get a new monitor but a very nice monitor like the ASUS ROG SWIFT Curved 34"... and a new GPU to make use of this... I really cant decide. Its like I am determined to treat myself to something and spend money, but dont know what on haha

The only portability I'd need is to take it downstairs with me sometimes. I've tried using this current laptop I mentioned, the X555LA and it can just about to play WoW at 30-50fps on the absolute bottom line minimum settings. Not worth playing on. I tried the Steam InHome Streaming, works OK when it works but always seem like you have to do alot of playing around each and every time you use it

Whilst mostly true even you mention it is far less these days. With how Intel seem to have stalled on desktop CPU's a lot of work has now gone into the low power CPU's and these days (as long as you don't go to the silly end of the spectrum), performances are very compatible and there is a lot less price gouging. However, it all comes down to what is right for the OP.

I know this is turning into abit of a blog but Im asking for help, Im confused.

I want to buy a gaming laptop, the ASUS G752VM its £1500 though. Now dont get me wrong, im no rich person to just splash money like that. I was going to treat myself with a credit card, its 0% purchases for 26 months so I was just going to setup a direct debit for £50 and forget about it.

Thing is as much as I think I want this laptop, would be so cool to have (At first definitely), I am just worried that I buy it and still end up on my desktop all the time.. leaving the laptop get dusty (Just like the £300 laptop I bought last year has).

I'd like to think I could transition into being a living room gamer, with the laptop, but realisitically my girlfriend probably wouldnt want me there all the time anyway... on teamspeak talking, I'd likely do her head in haha

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278QR might get this with a 1080GTX

I vote for the better screen and GPU, will cost less last longer and will perform without question unlike the laptop that will overheat and throttle.

If you want to game comfortably the answer is PC, gaming laptops are full of promise but fail to deliver.

Now all I need is the credit card to hurry up, they sent the PIN today alone. Such a tease! Hurry up Halifax before I change my mind again haha

Also, if you just want to "take it downstairs" you should be able to in-home-stream WoW via Steam (takes a little finagling but does work with non-steam Titles) for about 100$.

    What costs 100?

  11. #11
Steam Link - which is actually 60$ apparently. I thought it was more like 100.

Oh I already have the Steam Link, thats to use on TV though which I never do
I rather use my low spec laptop which I've done before, works alright just abit annoying to get it up and running sometimes

It has an HDMI out; you could plug it into a regular old monitor just fine, as long as it has an HDMI-in. You can use a keyboard/mouse with the Steam Link (it does have 3 USB ports, after all).

Hmm, i wonder if you could stream movies that way. Could be an interesting also-use.

Course you can, with steam link its easy you can just close big picture mode and have full access of your desktop.
Without steam link (if using laptop or something) you just add wordpad as a nonsteam game, start streaming it then press F1 and then you can minimize and access your desktop.

Sure you can. The Clevo P750DM2 has a 6700k in it. Not the most portable machine ever, of course, but it's not really that big either.

@OP, if you want a good gaming laptop look at Clevos (P650RP6/P650RS), the MSI GS63VR or the newly refreshed Alienwares (they got some nice sales going this time of year). They're basically the only options that I'd consider somewhat good. Anything else will overheat, throttle, have significant QC issues, etc.

I'm going to be totally honest I could only find one place that sells this "Clevo p750dm2" and I can barely find any reviews on it. I highly doubt it can cool a 6700k without throttling during heavy/long gaming sessions. Plus I've never heard of "Clevo" I wouldn't be sold on that at all. Honestly I can't really find out for sure if it has a 6700k or a 6700HQ in it. The msi laptop on has a 6700HQ in it.

And the OP apparently only uses his laptop to play downstairs, which buying a "Gaming Laptop" for that is a incredible waste of money. He could use something like the steam link or the nvidia shield to stream games from his desktop to his TV for that "couch gaming" experience. And saying those three models are the only good things out there is very misleading.

Clevo's one of the best laptop makers out there. You might know them under the names of their resellers like Sager, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, etc. Even Alienware used to be a Clevo reseller way back in the day. Their thermal solutions are always solid tbh, and the models with desktop CPUs are no exception. Even if you go by overall laptop sales, Clevo is a big player in the industry.

I forgot about the MSI GT62VR too, and probably a couple other models. MSI makes good machines usually (except the GS43VR). There's also desktop replacements and 17 inchers out there that are worth a look, but I focus more on 13-15 inchers for portable machines. It's not really misleading to say there's very few good options on the market right now, because that's the reality of things. Can't really think of a brand other than MSI, Clevo or Alienware that makes a quality gaming laptop.

I have honestly already decided at how daft I would of been paying off £1500 for something I'd barely of used, I really am not going to be getting a laptop now but just to add to this discussion incase anyone else stumbles upon it, I did do a hell of a lot of research - More than you can imagine and Shahad is right about the Clevo's, they are good, also another manufacturer not mentioned and who I was considering who use Clevo chassis is pcspecialist.co.uk with the Defiance 3 which I was looking at.

The MSI GT72VR (Same as he mentioned but he mentioned the 15" inch model), as well as ofcourse the ASUS G752VM that I was mostly interested in.

All very solid laptops. I was torn on deciding between the three.
@DesktopCPU's in Laptops. Its true. Some laptops do actually use Desktop CPU's now, and with the Pascal GPU's as close as they are to the desktop GPU's.. Laptops really are viable for gaming on now, as a PC replacement. Alot of people living in the past will still say things like...... yeah but its still a laptop...... IMO no longer viable. Even the price per performance is ALOT closer now than it ever used to be in regards to desktop vs laptops, dont forget you have to account for purchasing a screen, keyboard, mouse etc with the desktop too.. whether or not you have one already, for fair comparison purposes you just do.

Ultimately though, I just wasnt looking for a PC replacement this is why I am not bothering.

I went down this path with getting a laptop , I was not satisfied at all with it so i ended up taking a L and upgrading my computer. Nothing beats the good ol desktop
