Most people would say crochet and making models is a hobby, yet in both you don't need to socialize and it isn't "productive" either.

Ok, let me tell you what I meant in detail:

There are two meanings to this word, so there are two possible scenarios :

1- if the OP meant leisure time activities ( which they probably did), the most simple definition of the phrase: "nonproductive consumption of time.", shows that the logic behind this post is flawed.
2- if they meant to compare video games to a pony in the other hand, it would make more sense. a pony is not productive and usually would not help you improve in any skill, so are they the ponnies of the modern age?

My comment was an attempt to demonstrate how stupid this question is by hinting that the out of context meaning of the word makes more sense in the context of this post.

Hobbies don't require you to do anything productive, socialise or improve yourself. I think you are mixing up hobbies with not hobbies.

Yeah a hobby is something that you do for your personal enjoyment.

I enjoy restoring old and vintage cars every now and then. Doesn't require me to be sociable so by logic that isn't a hobby right? No a hobby is something you enjoy doing on a regular occasion and for personal enjoyment. So yes video games are a hobby.

Video games can do all of those things, despite none of them being what a hobby is.

Did you look up what hobby was referring to when the definition said pony? It's a child toy, not an actual pony.
