With the next patch bringing another huge tie in event intended to last as long as Youkai Watch but involving PVP i thought i should make a new thread for people wanting to get into pvp for it. Theres enough folks on the same servers to probably even do 4 man arenas together easily enough and this will be the only way to get the dyeable armour and possibly some of the mounts in the next event which coincides with the grand company restrictions for PVP being removed allowing for much faster que times.
Where to start
Go to your Grand Company headquarters after lvl.30 to take the quest "A pup no longer" which will send you to Moraby Dry Docks where you can request a ride to the Wolves Den and complete the quest. You have now unlocked pvp.
What is now available
The Wolves Den: This is where you find PVP vendors. Weapons, Gear and even PVP Materia which can all be bought with Wolf Marks and previous seasons become cheaper over time. There is also a newly added duel area by the dock where players can make like its outside Stormwind/Orgrimmar in WoW and duel out in the world with each other.
The Fold: Formerly lvl.30 or lvl.40 arena this is now lvl.50 and up scaled pvp involving 1 tank job, 1 heal job, 1 melee job and 1 ranged job. This is your entry level pvp and your most easy to get into to earn your first wolf marks. You kill the other team, everyone has one life. Simple as that. It has a matchmaking and fixed party option in the duty finder.
The Feast: Featuring unranked 8 on 8 matched and 4 on 4 fixed or solo ranked play the feast is a different game mode in a larger arena where players fight for points rather than killing the opposing team directly.
Frontlines: 4 large scale battlegrounds of 72 players. 2 at lvl. 50 Secure and Slaughter and 2 at lvl.60 Seize and shatter. Each has its own objectives such as point capture. It also comes with a duty roullette which rewards experience, tomestones and Wolf Marks
How to progress
If you check the main menu there is now a 'PVP Profile' between minions and Gold Saucer options. This shows your rank and records from previous matches. Getting pvp exp from matches increased your rank and this gains action points you can spend on unlocking or strengthening pvp only spells, skills and abilities. E.g to detect enemies hidden using abilities like the NIN's Hide spell. The more you play the higher your rank regardless of win or lose, though winning of course levels you up faster and thus unlocks more abilities to use in PVP play.
What to buy with Wolf Marks
There are many seasons of gear but the common consensus is if you are in pve gear of -at the time of writing this before heavenswards final patch- 230 or higher with a relic, Sophie EX or 60/60 DD weapon you will be good enough to start. After that you want to use your Wolf Marks to buy the ilvl.205 Gear if you don't have 250 or higher PVE gear. This gear comes with a new stat called "Moral" which reduces all enemy player damage against you, so the other stats may be weaker than your Alex normal gear but the Moral can in many cases cover you. There is also PVP materia to make you resistant to things like Stun or Heavy and a Chibi Cheerleader minion and some Orcestrion Rolls as well. Then you have your weapon which at the current time is so far behind in stats so +40 Moral may not be worth it if you are being hit by relics with 40-60 more crit than you.
What to look out for
-Always ensure you have more than 10,000HP, this is how much a PVP limit break will hit you for, thats a one shot. have over that limit and its not, simple.
-Crit and Det rule the day
-Buy the escape stun or purify ability early.
-Some skills work far better in the Wolves Den than the large scale Frontlines, mix and match since you can reset your points.
-Dont go it alone, no matter how tough you may be in PVE it aint the case here, always move with the group if you can
-Watch the map, you may be cutting your way through the enemy team like a hot knife through butter but if they have all the points in a map like Shatter than they are the ones winning even if they are killing slower
-Use and Abuse the lock on. Not many people know the game has a lock on system as well as tab targeting. On PS4 this is just a case of pressing in the right thumbstick to lock on, now you can run around a player and if they are a caster you have them effectively unable to cast if they panic and stand on the spot and keep reorienting to where you were a moment ago, losing their cast entirely. Also a good way to waste or even force a player to cancel out their limit breaks, wasting the bar.
-Not only are there the expected rewards like titles and mounts for completing PVP achievements but there are also job/role specific ones e.g The title "The Unleashed" can only be gained by winning 1000 matches as a ranged, magical DPS. Since you can be every job on one character dont forget to experiment after you have all your main jobs gear!
At the time of writing the Garo event and removal of GC restrictions means it will be the easiest time to jump into FFXIV both matchmaking wise and at a time when you wont be a beginner worried about letting your team down as a bunch of veteran PVP'ers stomp you. So perfect time to make a thread about it before the main thread turns into PVP Q and A for ages as people chase their Sentai Armour and Henshin emotes
AND MACHINISTS CAN REPLACE THEIR RIFLES WITH A TINY, TINY PISTOL!
