To use an extreme ideology and try to put other ones under the umbrella doesn't seem very practical, the implication is that other ideologies near it are on a slippery slope to becoming that one, the definitions really don't apply that well when you're talking about any form of extremely large or extremely small government since people's political opinions often change on a level of scale.

On that note, what really defined the evil of Nazism was its imperialism and its willingness to execute people for its beliefs, two things that generally only exist in belief systems that promote a large centralized state. You can't invade other countries without extracting wealth from your own citizens first to pay for your military, and relatively smaller states don't feel threatened enough by their own citizens to execute people.

People forget that the military was a huge part of Fascism, you often saw Hitler, Mussolini and Franco in military uniform. A government can give out socialist things like free health care and still be fascist, why not?

I haven't made any references to fascism in this thread, though it is, by definition, a right-wing concept. I'm not terribly interested in discussing it as it was an Italian policy and we're talking about Nazis.

The difference is that most of those deaths were due to mismanagement and negligence, not marching people into death camps and gassing them. As much as Nazi apologists want to claim there was some kind of moral equivalence between Hitler and Stalin, there simply wasn't. Stalin was one of the most evil men in history, but Hitler was far worse, period.

You may want to look up Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. They managed to kill around a quarter of Cambodia's population in four years and most of that happened in re-education camps (all city folk were considered enemies of the state, wonder where I've heard that lately) or the aptly named Killing Fields.

Hitler may not have been better than these guys. But I have difficulty saying he was worse. (His body count total is worse.)

You know the democrats and republicans switched during the civil rights era right? The democrats used to be the right wing until LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act which caused the conservative south to vacate the democrat party. The Republicans were all to happy to scoop up the voters the Dems lost and it changed Republican policy to better suit the conservative south.

Was LBJ right wing or left wing before or after he signed the Civil Rights Act? He was a white Southerner after all. I thought white Southerners are supposed to be uneducated racist bigots.
