Not a lot of advise I can give to be honest, but I would recommend checking out the sub-Reddit for Elite: Dangerous - there's a lot of good information there -

I guess it all depends on what you want to do - bounty hunting, exploring, trading, pirating, being a taxi, just seeing the sights. It all feels very overwhelming at first so I found the best thing to do was just concentrate on trading until I felt more comfortable with the game systems and procedures.
Watching some YouTube vids helped too - I found thomgadget's "Codger's Elite Adventures" very informative -
