US Treasury Amends Sanctions on Russian Federal Security Service (those from 30 Dec)

The United States has issued a license permitting certain transactions with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), which has been sanctioned over alleged interference into the 2016 US presidential election, the US Department of the Treasury said on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On December 30, then-US President Barack Obama announced new sanctions against several Russian organizations, including the FSB, and individuals in retaliation for Moscow’s alleged hacking into US political institutions. Washington is expelling 35 Russian diplomats on spying charges and is closing down two Russian-owned compounds in the US.

"GL 1 [license] authorizes certain transactions with the Federal Security Service (a.k.a. FSB) that are necessary and ordinarily incident to requesting certain licenses and authorizations for the importation, distribution, or use of certain information technology products in the Russian Federation," the guidance stated.

Russian officials have repeatedly denied the US allegations of election interference, characterizing them as absurd and laughable nonsense. Moreover, they have said such allegations are intended to deflect US public attention from revelations of corruption and other pressing domestic concerns.
Is is Trump selling out America again?

...or sensible approach that allows American companies (those not affected by other sanctions) to operate in Russia where you basically cannot do any IT work without buying FSB license that your security certificates is matching Russian requirements, with Obama's order not being well thought-out ?

Is there another reason that Putin is pretty much the ONLY foreign leader that Trump refuses to criticize?

I guess the silver lining is that if all the sanctions end up disappearing, Putin won't have anybody to blame for his country's shitty economy, and maybe- just maybe- the Russian people will get fed up with his kleptocracy.

Trump had a long chat with Putin as well as many other world leaders. All but the conversation with Putin was recorded.

Interesting times in the US right now.

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." - Isaac Asimov

It would be sensible approach if the country in question didn't have spies kicked out of US in 2010.

Even your assessment, the negative and positive are the same thing. Helping companies in US open up shop in Russia, is the same as Trump selling out America again. Trump never relinquished control of Trump Organization and allowing his company to expand to Russia is one of the ethnics issues Trump has.

Wasn't there just speculation that no recording happened?

    Was there any proof?

Do we honestly think two world leaders can have a conversation in this era without somebody recording it?

Your issue of Trump suggesting lifting sanctions on a country that had spies kicked out for trying to influence US politicians in 2010 and is currently building nuclear reactors in a country Trump placed a flight ban on, is the validity of the claim it was recorded?

    Selling out seems most likely.

He has to appease the man who helped get him into power. Tit for tat.

In 2010 you didn't? No, just like your forum name, that only changed for Trump.

I don't mind. Companies want to sell smartphones and tablets, the decission disrupted that. The issue was fixed, not sure why Russians cheer on this decision.

While it might actually make capitalistic sense, the timing couldn't be more ironic.

USA: We would like to sell you these electronic communications devices.
Russia: You cannot. You must go through KGB FSB first. And you are not permitted to do this.
USA: Why must we go through KSB first?
Russia: They want to be sure they can hack the devices.
USA: And why aren't we permitted?
Russia: Because they have been sanctioned for hacking devices.
