worth getting a 1070 now?

1440p gaming on my 290 is starting to show its age, or at least show how every game sponsored by nvidia runs like a pig on an amd card. idk, bit of both probably.

i can get a new "msi aero oc" 8gb 1070 for around £300, but while having a bit of a read yesterday, someone said something along the lines of.. "buying a 1060/1080 now is pointless, wait for 2xxx / 1080 ti or vega"

not desperate for an upgrade as i realise a £300 budget is pretty tight, but this opportunity to grab a 1070 popped up and seemed good, but then that comment just threw me.. whats y'all's thoughts?

this is with an i5 4670k @ 4.4ghz and 1440p @ 96hz, for reference. playing wow, overwatch and hitman mostly, but i play pretty much every game that comes out at some point.

If you can afford the 1070 and its an improvement to your current card and can get the 1070 for a good price, forget waiting, get the 1070 and be happy to have the third best card going right now. No brainer.

Vega is more than likely is going to be outside of your budget tbh, even if theres a smaller Vega, its a high-end card and HBM2 is expensive

if you were aiming for a 1080/1080Ti then yes you could wait for Vega .. a 1070 though I probably wouldnt


the one thing that would make sense to wait for is the Pascal Refresh and then get a refreshed 1070 (2070) thats faster than the vanilla 1070 (or get a cheap 2060 thats as fast as a 1070) .. but there are NO solid rumors atm concerning Pascal Refresh, it might not come at all or it might come 6-8+ months later .. given that and if you feel your current GPU is lacking - Id get the 1070

Looking at upgrading my GTX 970 to a GTX 1070 right now. I don't think it's a bad time at all to be doing the upgrade. When I find a solid version of the 1070 for ~$350 I'll be upgrading.

Only for people that buy the latest greatest. Chances are though, if someone is already looking at a 1070, like myself, they aren't looking for the latest greatest.

I haven't cared about AMD in.... hell, I can't remember the last time I bought anything AMD; maybe the late 90s.

With regards to nvidia cards, well, we'll see but I doubt the price on the 1070s is going to come down significantly anytime soon. The 970 I have now sold for $329 back in Dec '15. Right now its on Amazon for $299. In fourteen months the price came down $30. Granted, who knows, maybe things will be different this time and the 1070 I'm looking at for $359 will come down to $250 in a couple weeks. I doubt it, but, who knows.

What makes you think this? When has a new GPU coming out ever in the history of PC components lowered the price of stuff that's already out? I mean, you would think that the 1080 and 1070 coming out would have dropped the prices of the 970 and 980 right? Nope, it didn't. There are still 970s out there that are MORE expensive than 1070s. In PC components, new tech does not, never has, likely never will, lower the price of older tech. Just doesn't happen. There will be no price drops on 1080s or 1070s.

Called it. 1080 Ti $699, 1080 $499. No price cuts for 1070 yet, but they're coming... not nearly as steep I bet, but you'll probably see them in the $330 range soon enough.

They probably saw Intel's frantic attempt at damage control and decided to not give Vega the chance to do the same. A $499 1080 is sorely tempting, even for my Freesync monitor.

I dont think they will price cut any other cards tbh. If they took the 1070 down to 330 they would have to drop prices on the 1060 6gb and so on.

It's a fine balance to preserve market segmentation yet still offer a competitive product line. These GPUs have been out long enough the yields have probably increased to the point where building them isn't nearly as expensive (especially since once they've recouped the R&D it's just parts and labor on the cards themselves); with AMD's RX 480s to be had for $160 or less (I got a pair of Powercolor 4GB cards for $330 total in December, and sales like that are becoming commonplace) the GTX 1060 lineup is very hard to recommend to anyone who plays a variety of games.

A modest price adjustment on this six to nine month old GPU lineup is in order.

It wont happen, when the 980ti came out the only GPU that got a price cut was the 980.

And that was an outlier. There were price drops on every X70 card prior well before the next generation of cards came out, and most if not all of the X60s.

EDIT: Granted, prior X70 cards were closer to their X80 brethren than the 1070 is to the 1080, I'll give you that.

Wait for the 1080ti, see how well it overclocks, if it overclocks like shit get a 1070. Don't listen to the AMDrones saying to wait for Vega. Its literally the same shit every year. "JUST WAIT FOR X"
