Post Paris clashes after French police kill Chinese man

    Source

Violence in Paris over the police killing of a Chinese man has left three police officers injured with more than 30 people detained.

Demonstrators had gathered outside a police station on Monday to pay homage to the slain man.

His family denies police reports that he attacked an officer with scissors as they responded to reports of a domestic dispute at his home.

China has formally complained, calling on France to protect its nationals.

The 56-year-old man - father of-five Liu Shaoyo - was shot dead on Sunday night in Paris's 19th arrondissement (district).

Police say he attacked an officer with a sharp object as soon as he came to the door and the officer was only saved by his bullet-proof vest. Another officer then shot him dead.

But the family lawyer says it "totally disputes" this account.

One of the man's daughters told French media that her father, who spoke little French, had gone to the door holding a pair of scissors he had been using to prepare fish.

"They smashed the door in, the shot went off and my father ended up on the floor," she told the Parisian newspaper.

China's foreign affairs ministry has lodged an official protest, urging French authorities to do all they can to shed light on the incident and to protect its nationals' "security and rights".

China's intervention is unusual, says the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris. The government in Beijing has spoken out in the past about the threat to Chinese tourists in Paris from criminal gangs, but this is the first time it has implicitly criticised an action by French police.

The police watchdog is due to interview the family later on Tuesday.

At least 150 people took part in Monday's protest, some shouting "Murderers!"

There were accusations of police brutality last month, after a young black man said police had sodomised him with a truncheon.
Looks like France will need body cams as well.

Well guess more riots are incoming.

And last I checked, bulletproof vests are useless against stabbing attacks (unless fitted with trauma plates, but I somehow doubt police use these), but guess this is just an ignorant journalist confusing matters.

Une source au sein de la police précise que le coup de ciseau qui aurait été porté par le père de famille aurait «*ripé sur le côté du gilet pare-balles*» du policier, le blessant légèrement au niveau de l’aisselle

Roughly : the scissor strike slide over the bulletproof vest, wounding the policemen in the armpit

According to the source above, the man may have been mentally ill. He had been arrested multiple times before; once for throwing computer accessories off the window of the 6th floor of his residence, and another time for wandering around the streets with a crowbar in hand, like some kind of loony.

At first, I thought that the cop's violent reprisal against the protestants was a little suspicious. But, in light of this, it would seem that they just went for a no-bullshit policy.

Have to say it's quite funny to see China speak of protection of rights and safety...

The state of emergency must be putting people on edge. Their police force has some tightening up to do, but probably not so much in case where a fellow officer saw his partner stabbed.

The family says the man opened the door while having a scissors in his hand. The cop went "omg, he has something metallic in his hand!".

Which version do you find more probbable? The one where the cop ringing the door bell was attacked out of the blue by a chinese man yelling "Mao akbar!" or some shit? Or the one where it's the usual case of a cop shooting at the very first sign of threat that may not actually be a threat at all?

It's a "he said, she said" issue atm. Police and family are making different claims on what happened.

Oh no, now the Chinese are causing problems as well?

Honestly, you NEVER hear anything about the Chinese population in Europe. I always thought they were the best immigrant group since they never bother anyone.

Didn't someone translate a segment that said the officer got a stab wound in his arm pit? I guess he did that himself?

It is especially true of the French police, who spend most of their time standing under a streetlight in the rain, whilst smoking a Gauloises and looking wistful. In black and white.

I may have watched too many Alain Delon films.
