If you could build a sword with today's tech how would you design it?

Say you were going to time travel back to 1100AD and you wanted to create a sword to take with you using modern day tech, what kind of sword would you make and what would you make it out of?

You have budgeted $10,000 for this sword.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.

The epitome of sword technology, literally. Nothing can be improved on the katana.

I think Matt Easton made a video on this already, and basically the answer is just: modern steel.

    I believe this is it.

Pretty much this. If it's good enough for Scottish Immortals...it's good enough for you.

Not sure how I'd improve on it while it still remains a sword. The (best) old ones were pretty much perfected for their use, with metalworking much better than what's common today.

I would build a sword that would kill multiple targets.

Standard-issue straight double edged blade, three-four feet long, appropriate two-handed grip and straight quillons.

Oh, and a series of alternating contacts on one edge attached to a potent DC source. Two adjacent reach each other via external conductor -- say, flesh and blood -- and tazer shock.

a good ol machete suites whatever realistic use i'd have for a sword.

apparently similar things have been used troughout history, so i guess why change a good thing.

I think you might have some anger issues...

OT: A Katana using modern smithing would be basically ideal.

Well in the modern world, they are essentially ornaments or toys. I suppose in that respect your average fantasy wall hanger or Sword-Like Object would fit the bill.

In this scenario of time travelling back to 1100AD, I'm not sure what the sword is going to be used for. It's not exactly going to win a war and as a weapon of war, the sword was mostly a sidearm anyway. Personal duelling? If you want to go back in time and fight people in the streets. Maybe a messer in that case?

How about for selling? If you're in the year 1100AD and you have a sword made of modern high carbon steel, you'd probably make a fortune on it.

Mmmm, for what though? The katana is a very particular style, it has distinct pros and cons.
