Blizzard asking for 20 million dollars for esports participation

Is this a joke? How are these people supposed to pay that kind of money? You think anybody with that kind of money lying around is spending his time playing a videogame to become a professional player?

Hmm, what are you talking about, exactly? Any sources?
    Mother pus bucket!

While it's still too high a price, it's not people/average players buying in, it's compansies like TSM, Fnatic, NiP, Navi etc buying in. It isn't a group of 5 mates who are all good and want to compete.

But yes, it's still too high, but your idea of who would be buying in is wrong.

Considering other esports have prize pots that are nearing that point. DOTA 2 International 2016 had a prize of $18million, I can see why Blizzard asked for something similar. They are part of a company which literally milks the gaming industry with Blizzard and Blizzard themselves makes money in the billions from their games... Makes sense even if it's ridiculous.

When LoL charges 1.8mil, charging 20mil for OW seems a tad excessive.

$20 million is so high of a number I have to even question if that reporting is accurate.

TSM actually isn't buying in from what I've heard, 20 million is a big deal for an org like that, some of those others you mentioned surely aren't either, note that this would be almost or more than 10 times as expensive as getting a LoL team in the LCS.

This subject has been discussed for awhile on certain Discords and Reddits but Blizzard is actually mainly targeting big sports organizations, think NBA teams, who have this kind of money to burn.

However a LOT of the rumours about the OWL are exaggerated, which is also Blizzards fault, so don't take everything too seriously.

    Lmao, what.

Even when taken into account that it's companies and backers buying in, $20 million?

Someone is thinking a little too highly of their product.

Does this mean the half-time show for Overwatch League will have Beyonce, Cold Play and Bruno Mars in it?

God I hope not. Already too much of those pop trash halftime shows in traditional sports.

It's entirely possible that companies will eventually buy in. Blizzard sees what's on the horizon.

Blizzard -starcraft aside- are not known for their esports. I love overwatch but its very nature is a random ball of noise and ultimates that pro gamers hate. Look at pro tournaments for things like Halo and Street fighter and they always stick to a baseline. Empty levels preferred, effects off if possible. More flash and bombast is counter to their "is it a full A or a half A press to shave a half second off the animation?" level control obsession. Its why the few pro Overwatch teams are dropping the game. Its a party game, not a high level esport game and thats not a bad thing thats just an apt description of the product.

Blizzards been majorly thirsty for esports money since it went big and really doubled down when SC2 fizzled out. While Overwatch might be slightly more fun to watch than the pillar hugging snoozefest of WoW pvp its still a chaotic mess designed for fun playing not 1337 no scopes dew the dew and pound the 'ritos esports play.

So assuming this is your best in only shows how completely out of touch they are, its like they are to esports what steven buscemi is in that "how do you do, fellow kids?" image. The old man so out of touch he doesnt even have any notion of how ridiculous he looks or sounds.

It looks like in one of the largest markets it's a $15 million buy in. The smaller ones between 2 and 5. So it sounds like inaccurate reporting in general. This is ESPN. The ones who gave us deflategate, the biggest scam in NFL history so I wouldn't put it past them to have an agenda tied to this article.

Twitch is garbage in general though. It's more of the meme generation who watches it.

Two NFL orgs have supposedly joined the OWL, so clearly they have people buying into it if it's true. As someone else said, it's not single players buying into it, but giant established orgs, either just esports or sports ones

A lot of this is nonsense, what I'll agree with is that Overwatch is hard to watch because of certain spectator limitations but Blizzard can and definitely should make this better for OWL.

Claiming OW is somehow not a very competitive game is garbage though, especially because you compared a dying console shooter to it favorably and Blizzard would have to MAJORLY fuck up to not be bigger than the FGC with this game.

Organisations dropping teams (not players quitting mind you, very different thing) is also entirely because there's no scene right now outside of South Korea, Blizzard putting massive restrictions on third party tournaments already is an issue because the details of the OWL are still really vague.

Is there really that much interest in competitive OW? For me that ship sailed a quite while ago.
