Doubtful, more like pandering to Daily Mail readers with ineffectual anti-porn legislation.

Parliamentary system is different right? She already has the votes in parliament to do this? Not like the US were each of the 450+ congressmen vote however they want, leadership be damned?
We have our elections on 8th June, this is one of the policies they intend to implement if they get re-elected, which it looks like they will do.

the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet
this is something which needed to happen eons ago, it's disgusting that the current data protection act which is a one size fits all for the entire EU (which we are departing from thanks to Brexit) doesn't protect individuals rights properly. a new data protection act is currently being drafted for the EU which touches on this lightly, but it'll give us (Britain) the opportunity to actually crack down on companies misusing personal data.
The Conservatives will also seek to regulate the kind of news that is posted online and how companies are paid for it. If elected, Theresa May will "take steps to protect the reliability and objectivity of information that is essential to our democracy" – and crack down on Facebook and Google to ensure that news companies get enough advertising money.
this also is a good thing. making our entire news network BBC-esque, and having that 100% neutrality is a great thing. it would stop disgusting newspapers like the guardian and the daily mail from pushing nasty agendas.

I am not sure if it really will help neutrality though. This kind of legislation can easily be abused, especially as the internet is replacing other news sources. I mean look over the pond where certain news is labelled 'fake' by the government - they can't stop it from being posted at this moment. Imagine that, coupled with the ability to remove anything that is labelled 'not objective'.
Sure, there is a lot of spin and crap in the news media at the moment. But putting the power to cut out unwelcome information in the hands of people who came to power thanks to the spread of misinformation? Seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

And neither have a lot of voters. It may not take the likes of us a lot of time to set up a VPN, but for a large segment of the population, that is likely 'too much work'.

"The internet" is not a company. It's a medium through which news is delivered. There are multiple companies competing in the same space. The fact that print media can't compete with online media is no reason to hand out corporate welfare to an outdated industry. It's akin to taxing car manufacturers to subsidise the horse and buggy vendors because everyone uses cars now, i.e. bloody stupid.

It pretty much always worked like that.

But after all, it’s the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it’s a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger

'The laws would also force technology companies to delete anything that a person posted when they were under 18.'
That part (which is in both sources) sounds especially insane. I do not think they will get far if they try to 'become "the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet"' if that is what 'the manifesto claims'.
And then there is 'work to encourage technology companies to build backdoors into their encrypted messaging services'.
Did they learn nothing from the debakle that brought down the NHS with a virus just a few days ago?

It's a shame then that all those younger people that supposedly wanted to remain in the EU couldn't even be arsed to go and vote. They could easily have changed the result, but were too lazy to even bother. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Frankly I would make voting a legal requirement, with a hefty fine for anyone who doesn't vote without a solid reason. Though I would add an extra box to every ballot paper that says 'None of the above', and if that got the most votes all the listed candidates would be disqualified from standing again and a new election called.

It's just something proposed in their manifesto, who honestly thinks this will get any traction? They'd need the support of numerous businesses and countries to even make a noticeable dent. It's just another idea that will die in the committee stage and not even see a vote once they realise how much work it would take and how ineffectual it would be.

Don't let reality get in the way of your pants-on-head stupid shit posting though, everyone. Shrodingers Manifesto, everything gets put into law and politicians never fulfill their manifesto pledges.

Conservatives elect authoritarian assholes into power.

Act surprised and mildly outraged when they do authoritarian asshole things.

Good thing they decided to leave the EU, this wouldn't have been possible for them to do so while inside the EU!

Those evil tyrants in Brussels promoting silly concept of freedom of information!

Thing is, this is exactly what May was like in Cameron's government so should come as no surprise to anyone. She was out of her depth then is out of her depth now.

We've somehow managed to find ourselves in one of the most politically trying times for decades and we've got a bunch of clowns in power. We're fucked.
