So why isn't lucid dreaming super popular yet?

    1. It's been scientifically proven and extensively documented so in no way in hell does it belong in the same group as astral projections and other new age woo. It's a real thing.

    2. It's basically natural VR. As long as your brain can simulate it, you can do it.

    3. There's an abundance of guides and forums online providing pages upon pages of different methods for inducing a lucid dream.

    4. It's completely free entertainment. And not just in the traditional sense of the word "free", there are no opportunity costs either - you do it during the time you are normally asleep. You are literally not even wasting your time.

    5. It's extremely easy to learn - most people pick it up within a week or less of attempts.

People go to way greater lengths to get the entertainment that your brain can provide for free every night. So what's going on here? Why does it have so little exposure even though the vast majority of people have experienced it at least once?

Because it still requires some effort to learn and it isn't always successful. When I'm awake there's a whole lot of others things j want and have to do, and reminding myself that I'm awake isn't really one of them.

I had a lucid dream last week, I couldn't make whatever I wanted to happen happen, was pretty lame. In other lucid dreams I had in the past I could.

The time it takes to mentally prepare oneself I'd rather use doing other things. I've had lucid dreams before, but since I spent most of the day thinking about if I were awake or not, it kinda makes this 'extra entertainment' time pointless.

Not to mention the fact that it was all porn when the story talked about child porn specifically.

It's one of those things not fully understood but the jist of it is you know you're dreaming so you have some control as to how your dreams go. Think vivid dreaming (get punched and "feel" pain) but you can decide what happens (again, to an extent).

When I was on my depression meds years back I had lucid dreams all the time, courtesy of Mirtazapine.

I did complain to my doc that I can't actually work if I had a lucid dream if I so much as blinked a bit longer than usual, so it was changed rather quickly.

Whenever I realize I am in a dream, I get a rush feeling (probably because I am overly excited about it) and promptly wake up. My lucid dreams are never stable and collapse the moment I realize I am in one.

It's real, it just happens to be hugely overrated. It's almost like self hypnosis, you have to prepare yourself mentally for a couple of hours for the one maybe two hours that you can dream lucidly during rem stage sleep.

Basically, you 'tell' your brain "I AM AWAKE" so that when your body goes to sleep you stay semi-conscious.

Very few people can do it, or want to do it.
Several of my friends claim not to dream at all while they sleep.

It actually isn't easy to do in many cases.
And I learned to do it for an entirely different purpose that has nothing to do with entertainment.

Lately, I've found myself utterly unable to do it.
    I'm not sure why.
Either it's because my resolve has weakened, or it's because I'm sleeping very irregularly, or both.

Lucid dream isn't really that exciting and you will have less energy when you get up

There's a spike in its popularity few years ago, but it's gone now. However this cycle repeats every few years. So in a year or so there'll be yet another lucid dreaming fad.

I had it once, was great. Realized I was dreaming and took the opportunity to have a lot of sex. No shame here guys, this is what we'd all do.

I guess what deters me from actively trying to pursue it again is the fact that you gotta put some effort into it as you go to bed, and when I lie down to sleep I just want to sleep.
