    US Shoots Down Syrian Plane

A U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian Su-22 on Sunday after the Soviet-era fighter-bomber dropped munitions near U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces fighters, U.S. Central Command officials confirmed.

The strike was believed to be the U.S. military's first air-to-air kill involving fighter aircraft in years.

"A Syrian regime SU-22 dropped bombs near SDF fighters south of Tabqah and, in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of Coalition partnered forces, was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet," the command said in a release.

The attack comes after pro-Syrian forces attacked SDF fighters in Ja'Din -- a town south of Tabqah, and a known deconfliction area -- wounding a number of SDF fighters, officials said.

"Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force and stopped the initial pro-regime advance toward the SDF-controlled town," the release said.

Following the strike, the coalition alerted Russian counterparts to de-escalate the situation.

"The coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat," the command said.

Why did they let the Russian built Shiite Syrian plane drop the bombs before shooting it down?

Unfortunately. SDF my ass, we back al qaeda offshoots to try to oust assad even though our interests are best served by assad being in power. Arab spring may have been the greatest foreign policy calamity in a half century.

because until it did actually drop the bombs, it could be argued that it was never a threat. (even though, you, me and everyone else knows differently)

I am kinda surprised they still have a air force?

Do we have any info on the payload it dropped?

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding you but SDF is not an al qaeda offshoot

The last time the US got an air-to-air kill was in 1999.

Not a very modern one, but the rebel and ISIS forces don't really have much in the way of anti-air or any aircraft to oppose them. They've lost a lot on the ground in the war but the latest estimate is that they have around 45 (well minus 1) combat aircraft left between helicopters and fixed wing.

A "Super Hornet"? That and Tomcats, Eagles, Falcons, Raptors and other aggressive sounding stuff. Sounds like this stuff was named by a high school freshman with a bit too much testosterone to work with. Nah, let's design a plane, a real badass one, named something cute like the F-100 Kittypaw or the F/A-300 Awesometummy. Let women fly 'em too. Pain it pink. Kill a buncha ISIS and other religious fundamentalists with it to really piss them off.

Dafuq? What have they been doing between 2001 and 2011, especially 2003?

The US does have female fighter pilots. Many fly in A10s, which means plenty of jihadists have been killed by women.

There's an aircraft carrier named Kittyhawk, and NATO names for some Soviet aircrafts are things like Frogger, FROGFOOT, and FISHBED, lmfao.

The US took away Saddams ability to launch air-to-air attacks. Nobody else the US is fighting had the capability.

There we have it, guys. The US is only going after easy pickings.

North Korea and Iran won't make it that easy for them though.

    Pretty spot on.

Guessing we'll get a response soon.
