To each his own, if you didn't like it you didn't like it and that's fair but I don't really get this.
I don't understand why people who say stuff like this about franchise adaptations, say it like it is in itself a bad thing. Storytelling is different in books, movies and TV, so why just expect a bunch of people reading out loud from the book and acting out whatever motions is mentioned?
The story in the books, I'm told, is great and I find the story in the TV series great. Why does being different automatically make it worse? There should at least be something in the story specifically that you consider a detriment to warrant it.

I generally prefer the GoT novels. I do really enjoy the show though and it does some things very well that the books don't.

Consider Jhogo. Quite frankly he was nobody in the novels. Yes he did "things". Any of Dany's Dothraki could be substituted in without changing the story. Hell they changed his name for TV and most people probably didn't notice.

In the TV show he was interesting mainly because Elyes Gabel made him interesting. He unfortunately was written out because of Gabel getting better offers. Such is the problems with TV.

Or how about Jeyne Westerling? As a plot point, she is vitally important. As a character, she has no personality. We have no idea why Robb would fall in love with her. This is an example of the PoV technique used in the books being detrimental to the story. Robb is non-PoV so we never get into his head.

The TV show attempts to rectify this with Talisa although to be honest I think they were only partially successful. At least we get an idea of why Robb risks everything.

Robb Stark is non-pov in the books?

I'm probably going to start reading them during this season.

PoV Starks: Ned, Jon, Catelyn, Arya, Sansa, Bran, Theon, Sam, Brienne

Non-PoV Starks: Robb, Rickon, Benjen, Osha, Hodor, Luwin, Jeyne, All Other Tully's, All other household members

It mostly works but not all characters are present everywhere. Sometimes its interesting to express two different viewpoints of the same event which makes up for the occasional dead zone. Not all characters are adequately described but it works sometimes. Varys and Littlefinder are non-PoV and its makes them pretty enigmatic.

Interesting. I read a little more into the book narrative and some people claim that none of the "kings" are POV characters.

I stopped watching at some point in season 4... maybe 5 i dont remember.
It was just getting boring, too many different stories to follow at the same time...

It's one -if not- the most popular series in the last decade, and for a reason. Though I have to say I liked the first seasons more than the last one (season 6 in my case).
As far as the T.V. series goes: I'd say the amount of sex has a lot more to do with how popular it is, than the story does.

That was the distinct impression I got, and a big part of why it's never seemed appealing to me.
The reports of my death were surprisingly well-sourced and accurate.

When I tuned in I expected it to be like the Dungeons and Dragons movie, instead I got Esmeralda with mentions of fantasy here and there.
Overall it's just too shitty to watch, although sometimes has great scenes like the death of Joffrey.
You like the Dungeons and Dragons movie and not Game of Thrones.... I mean...

Sure, in a world where it takes literally seconds to access an essentially infinite amount of porn at any moment, those 10-30 seconds of tame nudes every two or three episodes are what's keeping millions of people watching Game of Thrones

I'm gonna go with "No" right now since I don't care about it at all.

However, the time that I watched all of Season 1 I was in a very poor state of mind so that may have reduced some of the enjoyment.

But I have no intentions of trying to give it a go again anytime soon since I wasn't captivated by the universe at the time, so for now I'll say that I don't like it.

Love Game of Thrones, naturally books > tv show.

Although I do I prefer high fantasy like The Stormlight Archives and Lord of the Rings.

Best show that ever was or will be.

None of the 5 Kings are PoV.

Most of the Queens are though: Dany, Cersei, Sansa, Arianne and Asha

I just cant find the time to jump and start watching and there is like 8 seasons worth.

By the looks of it, its Lord of the Rings with sex and extreme violence which i like but lately i just aint in the mood to watch any scripted television.

I wonder how many people come in here and say no..I mean how can you say no? It's okay you have your own choice..but HOW?! I mean it's normal but still HOW?????!

*shrug* Perhaps you should read the thread. People gave their reasons
    As I posted;
Only read the first four books. And by the time I finished that fourth book I realized that real-life tracts on torture was nearly as pleasant to read. When I heard that the show was even worse with gratuitous scenes of rape and shit...I just shake my head at what people call entertainment.
A lot of people just like a Low Fantasy that's little more than a glorified soap opera where the back stabbing is literal. I don't.

    The books; hell yes.

The show; less so over time.

ASoIaF was never intended to be Dungeons & Dragons. That expectation is foolish. Of course, it's about politics. Much of the books are modeled after real history. It is a Game of Thrones.

You must be watching something else then. A scene every 2 - 3 episodes? Yeah...

    Season 1: Episode 1 - 10; some form of sex/nudity
    Season 2: Episode 1 - 4, 6-10; some form of sex/nudity
    Season 3: Episode 1-3, 5, 7-8; some form of sex/nudity
    Season 4: Episode 1, 3-4, 6-8, 10; some form of sex/nudity
    Season 5: Episode 1, 3-7, 10; some form of sex/nudity

Maybe do some research before you try to spout off nonsense. Without the Sex/Nudity, this show would be dead.
