Thumbs up Amazon founder Jeff Bezos – briefly – becomes world's richest man

The founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos briefly overtook Microsoft’s Bill Gates to become the world’s richest person.

Bezos leapfrogged Gates, who has been the richest man on the planet since 2013, after a rise in the share price of Amazon ahead of its latest results due Thursday night.

According to a real-time billionaires index compiled by Forbes, the rise pushed the value of Bezos’s fortune to $91bn (£69bn) – compared with Gates’ wealth of $90bn. Their riches are calculated on the share prices of their respective companies and at the current values Bezos’s stake is twice as big as carmaker Ford.

But the Amazon share price fell back leaving Gates on top, but with less than $1bn separating them.

Amazing really. Once again a guy that started in his garage and is now sitting on an immense pile of money!

Yeah, started in a garage. And then god knows... Probably threw someone in front of a bus, closed some extremely shady deals, paid his workers low wages, exploited some more connections....

Shit never just goes from garage to almost 3 digit billionaire just like that through "hard work".

Gates has more than enough dead bodies in his basement, too. Just all the anti monopoly cases he had to fight...

Anyway, gz to the Amazon dude. 91 billion dollars is totally something a single person needs. Well, at least that's not how liquid he is...

The only reason Bezos even had a chance at passing Gates was due to the extreme amount of money Gates regularly gives to charity. If not for this, Gates would be too far ahead of everyone else for them to catch up.

Both men actually worked their asses off in the beginning.
Yeah. On small scale more hard work can easily result in better successes (though not always, not all business ideas will be successes). But when they reach a corporation status multi-million budgets, you can bet your ass there's multiple shady backroom deals going on all the time.

This list says we aren't taxing the rich enough more than anything else I've seen.

Buffet said his house cleaner paid 15% in taxes while he paid 19%. It's not fair.

    Who is the richest woman?
I believe the heiresses to L'Oréal and the Walton fortune are at the top.

The only dead bodies are those of other businesses. Amazon has brought the people what they wanted. A single online site to order everything from. One which solved the problems of the cost of shipping and long time it took from ordering to doorstep. The only thing that stood in the way of such an operation was competition, regulation, and making deals with vendors. With the success they've found, they continue to press forward on conveniences people never thought they could ever have when it comes to the shopping world. It's actually crazy to think that Amazon beat Wal-Mart to this market place solution. Wal-Mart already had the infrastructure of a warehouse in every community and could have had same-day delivery to your door-step years ago. The only problem they had was that they weren't inventoring enough products by sticking to only the cheap products.

So at 15%, Buffet pays his house cleaner somewhere between $9,325 to $37,950.

    I hope that's a small house.

Impressive, considering Amazon has been around a lot shorter compared to Microsoft -- he's got plenty of time to well surpass Bill Gates in the next 20 years.

What's amazing is how some people choose to worship the superrich.

About time, I ordered from amazon again and again... yet it was never enough to boost him up there. My last order seems to finally have done it.

Ah yes, countries that have these super rich people, who become so rich in the end they think they might as well give to charity...

What about, wild idea here, you pay your 25-40% taxes like well-off countries (Europe), that way you do some real good for your country + you get to make a difference same time.
