We came back from vacation on 08/04, and found out that our A.C. was not working. Fortunately, it was still under warranty. We called the company that installed the unit. They came out and said we need a new one. They will install a new one at no cost to us. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to do that for another 3 weeks because San Diego is the middle of a heat wave.

They told me that they need to replace the gas furnace also. Turned out after 2020, no Freon 22 will be allowed to be manufactured or imported in the US at all. So our new unit will use Puron (Freon 410A). The problem is that Puron operates at a higher pressure point than Freon 22. When replacing the outdoor condenser, the indoor unit must get a new evaporator coil, or the indoor unit must be replaced. The pressure differential in non-compatible equipment can cause equipment failure in 1 to 2 years. Lack of proper connection to a gas furnace has caused the furnaces to short-cycle and the heat exchanger to crack, resulting in the homeowner getting sick from CO poison. So we are getting a brand new furnace for free also.

Yay!! Yay!!

Another good thing between Sunday and Monday, the high dropped from 95 to 77, and will kept on dropping. So at least the next two weeks will be pleasant even without A.C.

So if your A.C. unit still uses Freon 22, you better start saving money to replace the unit after 2020.
