Unhappy Shift work blamed for rise in divorce as it makes it easier to have an affair

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...ing-marriages/

Shift work is already thought to be bad for your health - but it could be bad for your marriage, too. More and more employees are working nights and irregular hours, a trend which lawyers say is becoming a factor in an increasing number of divorces.

Strain caused by irregular hours is often compounded by the fact that long night shifts spent in the company of co-workers can be a breeding ground for infidelity.

Law firm Hall Brown said the proportion of divorce cases it dealt with which involved shift work had increased from seven per cent to 35 per cent over three years.

Of the 260 cases it dealt with three years ago, just 18 involved at least one partner who worked irregular hours. Now that number has grown to 60.

Claire Reid, a senior associate at the firm, added that almost 80 per cent of "shift work divorces" involved suggestions of infidelity.

"We have heard complaints that such arrangements can effectively mean living under the same roof but leading separate lives.

“That strain, of course, can be made even more acute when there are children to be cared for because it can prompt rows about whether a husband or wife is making more of an effort for the family.

“What has become increasingly clear, though, is that more marriages are breaking down not just because of the shifts but the extra-marital relationships formed while working them," she said.

Rosie Schumm, a partner at another law firm, Forsters, said that shift workers often feel "ostracised or guilty" because they feel unable to participate in "normal" family life.

"Irregular hours make it difficult to plan ahead as a family - for example, booking holidays away.

"Prioritisation of work over family life due to economic necessity could lead to a chaotic and ad hoc lifestyle, which places additional strain on a couple and the family unit generally," she added.

Previous studies have found that working night shifts is connected to health conditions including obesity, diabetes and depression.

Academic research has also found that shift work is linked to a higher rate of divorce - and the number of people working irregular hours is also increasing.

A study carried out in 2000 by US researchers found that among men working night shifts who had children, separation or divorce was six times more likely in the first five years of marriage than if they were working days.

Data released by the Trades Union Congress last October showed that one in eight employees in the UK now worked nights, with the number rising by 250,000 since 2011 to reach 3.1m.

More UK workers also now have "zero-hours" contracts, which do not guarantee them a certain amount of work and can lead to unpredictable working patterns.

The so-called gig economy, which includes companies such as Uber and Deliveroo, also allows workers to work hours of their own choosing, which sometimes fit around a day job or course.

The most recent figures released earlier this year show that 905,000 people had zero-hours contracts at the end of last year, an increase from 804,000 the previous year. Such workers are more likely to be young women, working part-time, the ONS said.
    How sad.
    1. We need the government to do more to ensure that our citizens are able to work decent hours and avoid shift work as much as possible.
    2. Is it a red flag when you are with someone who is a shift worker ? Very troubling.

Shift workers are kind of mandatory for some cases.

That is a pathetically small sample size.

He is not wrong. It is a too small of a sample size and it doesn't really have any controls either.

The majority of chemical processing plants including the one where I work take 2 days to start up and two days to shut down, how would non-shift work function in this scenario exactly?

Shift work has never been an issue, it's not for everyone but it has to exist. For society to run you need hospitals, emergency services and lots of other stuff running around the clock. I'm more concerned about zero-hour contracts in the service sector thanks to abusive cunts often leading management. Irregular schedules is far worse than switching between day and night shifts, having to work at almost any time of the day on short notice with no guaranteed monthly income is hell, those are very different.

What a retarded study and conclusion. The primary force behind divorce is marriage.

Humans are familiar with the concept of nuance.

    Indeed.

Look @Tennisace , Mistame solved the issue of divorce. Getting away with the concept will reduce divorce rates by 100%!

That does make some level of sense, granted it is something that would need a bit more backing material to be taken serious.

Nothing wrong with shifts, it's the never ending overtime that breaks one down. I mean we used to look forward to weekends, and vacations, but now people just want a day off to sleep. Er that is how it is in the US, as far as UK goes, don't you get a fuck ton of days off?

    Integrity in what?

Shitty people blame shift work instead of themselves being shitty people? I'm shocked.

Yet another Tennisace bait thread. Get lost, dude.
