    Taking a hero into comp

Hey, so in comp i tend to play Sym and Mercy, for two reasons i find them useful, and "natural" to play with. I'm not so high sr player.

However, my fave heroes are Sombra and Widowmaker. as I've never really "dpsed" a comp game I'm worried about starting to play them in ranked, and how to deal with it if it goes badly. I cant swap from a widow to a mercy as it'll mess up the team comp, and I'm not really going to be better if i swap to a different dps hero. (skill wise mostly, the pick might be better and thus i might do more with it but thats very dependent on game.)

So I guess my question is when did you guys/girls feel ready to take a hero that you had been playing a lot of in QP into ranked? I'm currently just trying to push into the next bracket and don't want to get so close to then just have myself lose coz of a massive stupid i did.

    Thanks
    Ent

Play a few games with the DPSers you feel the most comfortable with and you can be the judge on whether you play good enough or not.

Not a bad pairing to have. If one clearly isn't working for you, the other is so different that it probably will, a lot of Widows seem to back up with Sombra, Tracer or Reaper for that reason; me included.

Probably also worth picking up Pharah or 76 as they're just reliable sources of damage with no major downsides, and maybe a Tank.

in QP, what kind of percentages crit/bodyshot/miss would you think was acceptable before trying it out in comp (taking about widow)

The best thing for comp is to learn how to play one of each role competently. You have Symm and Mercy for support, Sombra and Widow for attack/defense so id suggest learning a tank.

Comp is about team play (at lower levels, not many seems to understand this and just play whatever hero they think they're best at usually to the detriment to the team and end up being carried) For instance if you pick widow and the opposite team have a genji, dva and winston then odds are widows not going to do a huge amount compared to others.

I felt ready as soon as i felt like i was doing well with a character. Dont worry about percentages of crit/bodyshot/miss. You will be paired (usually) with people around your skill level at least to begin with.

Just remember to recognise when something isnt working so you can switch out. Also you will sometimes get an idiot on your team who will pick a sniper and cant play them, or other dps and cant play them. Usually others will flat out refuse to change their role just because of this one person. Flexibility is needed. Get half decent with a tank, then you have the full set you can play as and when needed.

No offence, but if you take Widow or Sombra into Ranked you will be accused of throwing 9 times out of 10.

Instead of focusing on any one character I recommend getting good enough at all the main characters that you can swap to them as the comp requires.

Not anymore, I've only been moaned at for picking Widow once so far this season, and no one commented on the couple of matches I used Sombra. Actually, people seem to be appreciating them both a lot more; even got a 5 vote yesterday.

Mate its your game play whatever you like people will moan literally about anything in comp if they are losing so just pick what ever you have most fun with. You cant get penalised for playing a certain character so no need to worry, have fun

Really SR dependent. The lower you are the more you will be trashed.

But TBH low tier widow/sombra often means auto loose. That's why it not hated at high SR where people can actually use their brain and aim.

Find a few heroes for each role you like and fill in the gaps as needed and don't be afraid to switch.
Played a game the other day on volskaya as Mercy and I barely play her, I solo healed the whole thing and we won and healed 35% of teams damage taken so was very happy with that one.

Sombra actually needs her team to understand how she works and that's why she doesn't do well at those MMRs sadly, she's a really good pick because she doesn't have to do any really super mechanical stuff to make an impact, people just need to actually use her health packs and play around the area she's got under control.

She's one of the few heroes in the game where you can actually blame your team for being incompetent and not allowing you to do well.

Honestly, while hitting things is obviously good, what you should be focusing on is -what- you're hitting with those shots. If you're stood pumping body shots into a Roadhog belly while he's being healed by a healer, rather than shooting for the healer, it doesn't matter if you have a high hit/crit percentage, the damage is going to be entirely negated. And worse, you're going to be feeding that healer ult charge.

What you should be doing is punish people who are out of position and going after healers in particular, but any kill you can get makes it one less person to stop your team from completing your objective.

One thing I've found very helpful when playing WM is doing the Widowmaker headshot only elimination matches that people usually have in the arcade. It's a good way to practice aiming and flick shots without the pressure of QP and comp, letting you focus on training your muscle memory.

Not at all. The current no-barriers 4 DPS meta is quite favourable to Widow. The popularity of Tracer and Genji makes Sombra a decent pick too, as she can actually counter most of them effectively, at mid levels at least. If people do take a Rein or DVa, then all the better for her.

Last night I played a game with a Sombra, defence on Volskaya. We lost the first round because we were down a support based on that pick. Attack round he actually swapped to something viable so we got to round 3.

Then he goes back to Sombra despite everyone POLITELY SUGGESTING that that wasn't a good plan. He insisted that he was going to get off a great ulti, and we just needed to go in when it went off and everything would be fine. I said "I'll bet you $5 we lose point A before your ulti finishes charging".

Needless to say, he owes me $5.

Lol could just be people are tired of complaining and don 't care anymore, I know I am after so long begging for people to stop messing around in ranked matches when half the time I'm the only one picking a tank or healer

Oh no, all that ended last weekend. Complaints every other match now, people throwing even if I switch. It’s awful, I’ll see how it goes for a few more days but I’m thinking of ending the season here. I’m down to barely 1800 SR now because of it, and I don’t know if I can recover from that, not with the toxicity and negativity at this level.

Reaper seems good for stomping this level, maybe I could try that.

Learn a strong tank, like I see people complaining every season but I just log on with Zarya and easily get to 2500 in a night or 2 and then stop playing comp. It's so much easier than the uphill battle of a Widow or Sombra, especially because everyone always wants to play the flanker dps role.

Did kinda work with D.Va, but she can't tank for shit anymore and I dunno about Zarya, she just doesn't work for me. She's a great hero, but I find her kit awkward.

Think Pharah might be the answer, she's an absolute beast around here because no one can shoot straight and no one looks up >.<

At your SR Junk and Pharah are good picks. Unless someone is a high ranked player that dropped on purpose you'll almost never get hit. Sym and even Bastion can play well as people can't seem to figure out how to counter them unless the person on Sym or Bastion are brain dead.
If you want to start playing something new and get ready for higher SR, Tracer is a fun pick as well as 76/McCree being decent all around (personally I hate McCree's rate of fire).
You already devote a lot of time to Widow, and while I appreciate a good Widow, I always feel they are just as bad as Genji mains, in that regardless of how little they are helping or getting countered they just refuse to switch after the game starts. Had a game today with a Genji going against a McCree, Winston, and Sym and was completely useless. He was getting countered so hard that people even accused him of throwing. Same token, I've had Widow on my team that does really well but then enemy team grabs a shield tank or a Winston to counter her (you don't even need to kill Widow to counter her, just chasing her off every time she thinks she has a good spot and then getting back to the team fight is almost always sufficient), and refuses to swap, making us effectively a 5v6 game.
Also, around 2300-2500 Hog/Zarya comps are super effective if played well together, and Hog might be another you could try out.
As to the OP: find heroes you like and get good with them, but keep in mind, characters like Torb, Widow, and Sym are usually viewed as bad picks by the majority. Try and branch out a bit too. If you want in on Comp, start playing comp; but, if you go on a losing streak call it for a while. If you still want to keep playing the game, swap to QP or FFA and branch into some new characters so you aren't limited to only 3-4. There will be games those characters have been picked.

I'm happy to switch when I play Widow, and I do. In fact, that match with Pharah I started as Widow and it was obvious very early she wasn't working. What happens a lot is that I just don't know what the answer is when I am playing well, get 2-3 picks, including a support and my team just can't capitalise on it. You'd be surprised how often that happens, and where do you go from there? It's why I took up tanking in the first place, and I'm okay on defence with Orisa but without D.Va to attack I'm a trash grade Winston and too often find myself helpless as Rein. I guess I just do need to spend more time on Zarya for that.

Alternately I can play supports, I'm okay with Zen but prefer Ana. I'm actually pretty good with her, but there's always a Mercy now and it's too much healing for the team, and since they cut Ana's damage she doesn't do enough in the 'fill' time to be worth it. If there isn't a Mercy, there should be, and I'm not as good as I once was, I've not played her a lot since Ana was released.
