    DVI-D: Dual or Single

I have a DVI-D single link cable. My new graphics card has room for a DVI-D dual link cable (as does my monitor). Could this be the reason my graphics card is not currently working? Do I NEED the dual link cable? For the record, there is power going to the card. The fan is spinning, etc.

It's been forever since I've installed anything on my own on a PC... so thanks in advance! To be clear, I am getting nothing (no signal to my monitor) with the single link cable (though it worked fine with my old card).

Sounds like an issue with the card if you know the port works on the monitor, old card, and with the same cable. If you aren't even seeing the bios you can rule out it being a Windows issue of trying to force a resolution and refreshrate combination that normal DVI doesn't have the bandwidth for.

which port did your old graphics card have? i think dvi ports on modern cards are dvi-d dual link only now?

i recall buying a single link cable by mistake and getting no signal before realising my oops~

You _should_ get a picture regardless. Only way it wouldnt give any is if the screen doesnt understand the lower-than-native(perhaps) resolution. Though then the screen should report it on OSD as an ”unsupported signal”.

Single link is good for up to 1920x1200 at 60hz

    DVI-Dual for DAYS.

But honestly, DisplayPort is pretty wonderful.

It is strange you aren't getting an image. Get another DIV single even and see if it works or not, the cable might be a dud. I've experienced duds. Some monitor manufacturers package absolute SHIT cables with their monitors and it's a damn shame.

Thanks for the responses all. Turns out it is a bad card. I reinstalled my old one and everything worked fine (using the DVI-Dual). Will see what happens when Amazon sends the replacement.

As in you used the same cable?
