Once you've sold your soul once for your party once, it's just a few steps more to go. It's not like the party of fiscal conservatism woke up one morning and decided to be the party of vitriol and evil, it's a gradual change over a lifetime, going from thinking a consenting adult giving another a blow job while President is grounds for impeachment to being OK with pedophilia.
