Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

I am about to start a Prot Warrior alt, gonna play with 2 friends of mine (DPS and Healer).
We will be doing pure leveling (no PvP or Twinking).
Il be going Protection spec since level 1 (dont like arms or fury) so i would like some advice from the more experienced Warriors around here:

    Shoulders: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42949 VS http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44099

    Weapons: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42944 VS http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44091
If i am not mistaken, Protection Warriors use FAST one-handed weapons? please correct me if i am wrong..

    Ranged: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42946 VS http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44093

I am aware that Resilience works is PvP only, however certain BoA PvP gear seems better then BoA PvE ones.
My dilemma is choosing the better one (stat-wise) for Prot Warr leveling (mostly in parties/instances).

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering my questions.
    Cheers all..

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

Like Gorrosh said I'd probably get the resil stuff since it works for getting you crit immune. It also has the added bonus that when you get to level 80 and decide if you want to PvP at all you've got a little bit of gear. I'd also probably avoid the daggers simply for the fact that once you reach max level there aren't tanking daggers and you'll end up having to level up swords/axes/maces. When tanking you have to have the weapon skills pretty much maxed out in order to hold threat.

As for fast weapons the reason warriors will go with a fast weapon is so they can spam heroic strike quickly for threat/rage dump. You certainly can tank with a slower 1hander it's just generally not the way warrior tanks go though.

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

The reason protection warriors use fast weapons is so we can get rid of the rage we do not need by casting a Heroic Strike which consumes our white hit.

During leveling, unless you do mass pulls (and depending on gear, even if) you won't swim in rage, so a slow harder hitting weapon is definitely fine.

Like the poster before me I'd say go with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44096 or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42945

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

The Resilience and extra stamina on the pvp gear might help you as a tank, but to be honest you won't need that help while you level. Every instance before level 80 can be tanked in dps gear, by non-tank specs, they're just easy.

Go with the PVE BoA pieces if you're not going to PVP, the extra bit of damage you get will be worth more than the extra bit of survival while you level. The +Hit on the PVE weapons is worth FAR more to you while you level than stamina or resilience, cause Shield Slamming is fun, and it sucks ass when you miss one of those.

If you do plan on PVP'ing at any stage, even at 80, as has been mentioned, the PVP BoA pieces help you get started on that.

    What Hreth said.

The PvE shoulders are quicker to get, and generally better unless you PvP. At the end of the day, you won't really notice, but the PvE shoulders are a better bet.

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

i levelled fury to 70 (pre WotLK) and tanked all through this time using gear that dropped off mobs or quest rewards. Anything with +str and +stam is fine. not a great deal of +def needed till outland, and then you get bits that have it and also have sockets so if you want you can gem for it.

Just learn a good threat rotation and tell your mates to give you a second or 2 to get aggro and its ezy mode. I found the WotLK instances were a bit harder and its good (and easy) to stay def capped from 70 -->

go for the non pvp ones >_>

You can frikkin tank naxx 25 without being crit immune.
I think you can lvl without being crit immune >_>

I would also go for the faster wep (aka DAGGERS) faster weps are an advantage when lvling cause you're not taking the deep wound talents..

The hit and crit stats are frikkin golden in the early lvls, as you earn shitloads of % from small amounts of em : >

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

Ive had a tank in his arms gear + shield/1her tank maly (cant remember if it was 10 or 25)

U can get critcapped with resi, theres shaman tanks who use a resi/def combo to get critcapped

*cough* Resilience is as much a PvE stat as any, you just need a load to see any benefit from it. There's two ways to be crit immune (Druids excepted) - Resilience and Defense. If you can't get defense, stack resilience. It's often regarded as a PvP stat due to its prevalence on PvP gear and very limited (if non-existant) appearance on what's considered PvE gear.

Defense is quite obviously preferred for tanking, but it can be done with Resilience instead.

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

I would go for all the PVE versions if u got the badges.
If you are gonna be buying atleast 1 PVP version, get the gun first, it sacrifices the least amount of dps stats for resilience.

The dagger has like no stats at all, just a SHITLOAD of stam and resi, totally not worth it while leveling, especially when you KNOW your healer isnt some 10 year old kid who never figured they could get higher ranks of their skills :P

    No, you.

Find me the part that specifically states it's for PvP and not PvE.

P.S. Look at the categories it's filed under down at the bottom. Do you see tanking? I think you do.

itd appear that its pve nerf was never actually implemented.

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

3.2= Resilience now only affects PVP damage

    # Resilience: No longer reduces the amount of damage done by damage over time spells, but instead reduces the amount of all damage done by players by the same proportion. The other effects of resilience (reducing critical chance, critical damage and mana drain effects) have not changed.

This means you still get crit reduction from resilience in PvE. So it's not useless, it works like defence regarding crit immunity, without the +miss/dodge/parry/block stat increase.

So before pointing out in a shiny red color something, be sure you know what you're talking about.

EDIT: my two cents about OP: go with PvE equip, you really don't need resilience while leveling if you don't do PvP. At those levels a crit is irrilevant, and when you'll need some defence (tbc and wotlk instances) you'll get enough from quest rewards and crafted sets (cobalt and saronite are good for that). Hit at low levels is priceless, and PvE BoA gear has it. About weapon... got not enough experience on tanking warriors to help you, sorry.

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

go with pve gear all the way tbh. you don't need any defense pre outlands (I'd say pre northrend tho), and if you're gonna level as prot with a friend specced for healing, there wont be anything ever stopping you. as for warriors tanking with a fast weapon, those days were over with 3.0 tbh. it doesn't really matter anymore, only real differences between fast and slow now are that you gain rage moe steadily with a fast weap, and you can also dump it faster with a fast one. a slow weap wont kill your threat generation if that's what you're thinking

Re: Prot Warrior & BoA Gear - Leveling?

As Shornaal said, it'll still be possible to be crit capped. Defense IS preferable, but Resilience is not a wasted stat.
