So I have been making the adjustment from clicker to binder after having clicked since WoW release. It is NOT easy to say the least but since my passion has always been PvP (and I have done fairly well as a clicker) I wanted to up my skills even more by rolling a mage and learning to keybind most of my abilities.
What I need help with? Well im looking for a simple setup to get me started, nothing too crazy. I've leveled up to 29 so far and its been a rough go getting used to it but its coming along slowly. I only have a few core abilities binded but I wanted to see what other, more experienced binders have to say about which abilities to bind and what an easy setup would look like. Thanks ahead of time for any positive feedback!
Re: Help! trying to convert from clicker -> binder!
I use the following setup:
With Alt AQW...
With Shift 123...
Default 123...
Everything in the bottom two hotbars are macroed to be useable with Alt to cast different spells, like this:
#showtooltip
/cast [modifier:alt]Presence of Mind;Arcane Blast
The above macro is placed in the Default hotbar at #3. Pressing 3 will cast Arcane Blast; pressing Alt + 3 will cast Presence of Mind.
Pressing Shift + 1 currently casts Counterspell, while Shift + 3 is Scorch.
Everything in the top hotbar is highly situational abilities, like Alt + A to cast Blizzard (AoE), while Alt + E casts Evocation.
It takes a while to get used to, but it really frees up a lot of space and enables you to cast a ton of utility spells without ever moving your mouse or taking your fingers off the WASD-keys.
Here are all of my keybindings (PvP Arcane):
MB3 = Mousewheel Click
MB4 = Mouse Sidebutton Click
A+# = Alt + #
S+# = Shift + #
C+# = Ctrl + #
- = Macroed
1: Arcane Barrage
- A+1: Fire Blast
S+1: Counterspell
2: Slow
- A+2: Arcane Power
S+2: Invisibility
3: Arcane Blast
- A+3: Presence of Mind
S+3: Scorch
4: Arcane Missiles
- A+4: Fireball
S+4: Mana Shield
5: Frost Nova
S+5: Ice Block
6: Polymorph
9/MB4: Arcane Explotion
10/MB3: Blink
A+Q: PvP Trinket
A+W: Fire Ward
- A+S+W: Frost Ward
A+E: Evocation
S+S: Slow Fall
- A+S: Spell Steal
A+D: Mana Gem
A+C: Remove Curse
F1: Cooldown Macro
That is 25 different spells all useable without moving my fingers from WASD.
Here's my Cooldown Macro:
#showtooltip
/cast Icy Veins
/stopcasting
/cast Arcane Power
/stopcasting
/use Mana Gem
/cast 14 (bottom trinket)
/stopcasting
/cast Mirror Image
Re: Help! trying to convert from clicker -> binder!
Knowing what to bind is easy and you should already know that. As for a setup I came from FPS games so I kept my bindings similar to that which is pretty basic.
1-6 and F1-F5
I switched up WASD to be WQSE since I use A and D for CS ans SS and using Q and E for strafe has my fingers a little closer to my function keys.
Then I made use of R, F, T, V and G for my pointer finger and took use of my mouse buttons and a couple Shift+ bindings.
It is entirely up to you though on what is best for you and where to bind your abilities. People can sit here and type out all their binds but it wont really help since it is their bindings and that is what they are use to. You just have to bind up and get used to them. I would say a good rule to hold yourself to is make sure that your important abilities are the simplest bindings since using modifiers may be a little overwhelming at first.
Re: Help! trying to convert from clicker -> binder!
Do what I did.
1. Buy the SteelSeries WoW Mouse
2. Re-map all of the mouse keys to F1 thru F12
3. Bind the corresponding spells on your action bars to F1 thru F12
4. Play one-handed
5. ???
6. Profit
Re: Help! trying to convert from clicker -> binder!
