Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

Hello, it's been long time since I played as shadow, but now, since my server is just full on holy priests, I'd like to play shadow again, coz I even liked it.

But the question is, how is a shadow priest now?
    How's its dps?
And is it still worth to play it instead of healing?

    Thanks for answers, cheers.

Skipping the barely discernible English, Shadow is great. In PvE.

It's multi-target capabilities (See: Mind Sear) are extremely effective and efficient, and it's a little more resilient when it comes to Raid damage than most other casters in cloth (15% less damage, plus Dispersion on demand). The front end single target dps is a little lower than the warlock/mage (depending on spec, fight, RNG, buffs, etc etc etc) but we're talking like 3% here. To 99% of population, it's not enough to say "omg who wants a shadow priest?".
And besides, Shadow Priests are known for top dps on the current hardest encounter in the game: Mimiron Hard-Mode.

Shadow has quite a few things going for it. Just don't expect to PvP well with it any time soon.

Meh, where people pull that magic number from really means little. For example, I did 2400 dps as an unhitcapped Smite Priest last week on Ignis. (We had 4 healers in 10 man, don't ask). Does that mean I do 2400 dps in t7.5? Before or after buffs? Do you count bloodlust dps? Overall dps? Movement in fights?

Standing and hitting a moving target dummy (Ignis) is where alot of people try to get these numbers, doesn't really mean much though. And when Patchwerk parses were the top thing, Shadow was getting overall for the fight, 4.5-5k over the three minute kills. And that was then.

Re: Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

i did 4400+ on all my patchwerk kills once i was naxx-25 geared out.. i haven't done patch since mid-3.1 so i don't know what i'd do now =/ probably 5k or so

keep in mind shadowpriests are currently one of the lowest single target dps classes in the game. we do decently but we can't keep up with locks or mages or well, anyone really.

Ok, thanks for answers, still expect more points of view

By the way, what profits does shadow priest give now to the raid?

Re: Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

3% hit, replenishment, fort, spirit, and very minor amounts of passive raid healing

Unglyphed, with almost full holy gear i did 1700 on HC dummy :P

    What glyph should I use?

I tried "cutting butter" spec: http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?prie...6&version=9855

Are those glyphs there still ok?

I've read something in Shadow DPS 101 thread, but well.
Im using on start SWP then VT then MB MF MF MB MF MF with some DP refresh aswell.

Nezoia has a nifty little thread about this in priest discussion.

    http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?prie...&version=10192

    Specc and glyphs.

Rotation (Different from Nezoia): VT, SW:P, VE, Inner focus, DP, Mind blast, SW, Mind flayx2, Mind blast, SW...Was rinse repeat... Keep your eye on your DoT's though. If they fall, your dps takes a massive hit. Shadowfiend, trinkets...Yeah Yeah, whenever you need them...

Don't worry. A shadow priest is a very good dps to have in any raid group. First of all, the 3% spell hit is god for every spellcaster. Secondly, Mind Sear is the best aoe in the game. Thirdly, a shadow priest may not have the best single-target dps available, but they do have more survivability and utility than most. Most importantly, they have tree dots being able to still deal damage while they move around, such as when avoid the fire during Firefighter.

Overall, a good spec, and I havn't even mentioned the dispels, buffs and selfheal also available, as well as replenishment. Also, I did at most 5.1k dps on Patch with most Naxx-25 gear before 3.1.
If I was a Blizz server technician, I'd hijack a server and use it to download porn 24/7. Guess why the instance servers always are full B]

Re: Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

Shadow is a spec that can output a number such as 5000 dps over the course of 3 minutes on a Patchwerk fight if you have T7.5 (2 pieces) and other best in slot items available from T7 dungeons. There are many parses confirming that so if we're to talk about what dps you can put out in T7 content with T7 gear it'd be 5k.
But that's only if you're good with timing your abilities and only then. It's not a class like a mage where you can output 4k dps by shooting fireballs.

If you're worried about dps and topping the chart, then I'm sorry but you're wanting to play shadow for the wrong reason. It's an extremely good dps class in Ulduar and can top dps at many encounters, not just Mimiron hard mode. It's resilient against raid damage, extremely hard to kill, extremely hard to overaggro a tank and never runs OOM while bringing one of the most powerful AoE spells in the game.

If you play it well, you'll be really satisfied with your shadow priest, it's a rewarding spec for ones who grasp the fact it's not the best single-target dps out there.

Re: Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

As mentioned before its like this:

Single Target - You're at the bottom here, every other class is better no matter what people say, where your at say 5k on a tank and spank fight, the other classes are at least 500-2.5k more than you

2-4 Targets - Can do well if you manage dots properly, warriors + some other classes should beat you

AOE - You have one of the best if not the best aoe in the game

Deal with being a terrible single target class, most fights arnt tank and spank so in many ulduar fights and more than likely in the future you should be competitive if you play properly.

Because it's completely impossible that you aren't playing your spriest to it's max capability. Perhaps I just had extremely lucky RNG everytime I did patch in T7.5 and achieved 5K+ DPS.

Re: Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

A few clarifications seem to be in order.

First, whats with the myth about SP being best dps for mimiron hm?

They are over 1k dps below the best dps classes:
    http://www.wowmeteronline.com/rank/c.../pri/7/0/3/310

The statement about SP being the best AE class used to be true at the very begining of wotlk when DP could be spred by DKs. They are still among the best zoners, but behind rogues, LB mages etc.

As for raid utility, SP provide replenishement .... and so does everyone and their grandmother so its pretty useless. The healing through VE is also neglectable. That leaves the 3% hit. Yep its you or a moonkin.

To sum it up, if you like a class that combines excellent survivability and good AE dps with bad single target dps and low raid utility, then SP is for you.

Re: Shadow DPS and gamestyle in 3.2

We are in Highend Raids prolly:

    -Worst Single Target DPSer
-3rd best aE(Feral Droods & Rogues own us there and maybe now Mages with the new LB(yea even feraldroods....)
    -best Caster(!)Class in survivability
-One of the best Mana per Dmg Class-->thats why were so good @ Vezax but ele shaman own us there too..)

On Mimiron HM (ok i healed both Kills but could dps some trys too) i was maybe in midd of all dpser, i know that p3 favor us mostly but we cant reach the damage of other classes within this phase.)

Generally was I want to say, thats our DPS is too low, not much but it is noticeable.

(I have done everything except of yogg +0 and Algalon 25)

One of the best Mana per Dmg Class-
Tell your mages to spec frost, and watch them beat you merciless.

I'd like a bit higher single-target dps, it's bugging me not being able to break 5k on Algalon, even with 99% DoT uptime. On Mimiron, due to the nerfs, the single-target dps classes win again, specially with the stategy my guild uses, where it's impossible to multi-dot before P4, and not allowed in P4 due to controlled dps is required.

On Freya we do pretty good, and due to heavy survivability, is the only class besides warlocks, that my guild brought 3 of to a single-fight. The extraordinary AoE damage, and abilities like Fade (removing roots), and PW:S, makes us brilliant there.

I think our position as a support class remains, but they should buff single-target dps (read: Mind Flay, and Mind Blast), more. Specially Mind Blast, as it does way to low damage considering it's long and annoying cooldown.
