well its been stated in the wow lore that saronite ore is basically the oozy offspring or residue of Yogg-Saron himself soo....if the shoe fits i guess :-\

I'd like to think that it is some minor reference to Lord Sauron

    Ulduar was merely a setback!

WoW characters that need/deserve to get killed/punished/otherwise removed from the story: Tirion(dead now), Thrall, Malfurion, Sylvanas(soon?), Jaina, Tyrande

Wow... I did not see that one coming...

Anyway, as Masterpd85 stated, Saronite is basically tainted metal from the ooze you see around Yogg in Ulduar. I'm guessing the ooze hardens after a while and has somehow leaked into Northrend's mountains. There has been some talks about Yoggy's tentacles reaching all the way down to that big-ass tree in Grizzly Hills so I'm guessing that's plausible.

Furthermore, if you go to the saronite mines around Northrend, you'll find people who spend too much time around the ore tend to go mad and hear voices. Another one of the old god's calling cards.
