What do i gem for?

I only recently started playing my shaman again, and thus, have only recently started "caring". Anyways, I've picked up a lot of gear lvl 232 - 245. Anyways I don't have a lot of money and i want to put epic gems in my gear...thus, the question is, what should i be gemming for? A straight stat + reason would be cool =) would appreciated, if you need me to link my armoury i can.
