When do you start using Holy Light more instead of FoL?

Hi, long time reader, don't post much etc but the topic title is pretty self explanitory. When should a holy paladin start using Holy Light to heal instead of spamming people up instead of FoL?
Stats are:
1991 sp
22k mana
30% holy crit
6% haste
All unbuffed.

You should switch to HL healing when things get tough to heal. You can heal Naxx 10/25, OS 10/25, Malygos 10/25, and Ulduar 10 BETTER than a HL spammer with FoL. However, once you move up to ToC 10 things become fairly even. In Ulduar 10 hard, 25, 25 hard, and the rest of the ToC events, you're going to want to spam HL just because it's plain better for hard hitting content.

TL;DR version:
Flash of Light spam is great for frequent bursts of low damage and for previous tier content.
Holy Light spam is better for heavy tank healing and for heavy raid damage situations (most hard modes).

The best response would be: if you're not pushing your mana pool, you're doing it wrong.

Explained further: Paladins have many ways of regenning mana. SoW + melee can be huge and is usable on most fights. Knowing when to use Divine Plea can be huge.

The nerfs to Paladin regen hit passive regen hard - Illumination and Replenishment. However, they didn't touch active regen - SoW + melee and Divine Plea.

With your gear, you may find yourself using Flash of Light to avoid going OOM. This is fine. The goal is not to go OOM but rather to push your mana pool. If, by the end of the fight, you could have Divine Plea'd more than you did, or you end with the majority of your mana, or you barely SoW + melee'd, then you could have used Holy Light more. If you're doing all that you can to regen but still going OOM, then you need to use Holy Light a bit less.

There is no magic number. You just have to push your mana pool in order to get the most out of it. This will vary with your gear, the raid's gear, the length of the boss, the mechanics of the boss, and etc. Push your mana pool.

You start using spam HL in certain situations in Ulduar and ToC
From ToGC you 'practically' start spamming HL the whole time

When you have enough mana to play with. I've found that beacon glyph facilitates HL "spam" although I remain flexible with my heals and still fol for steady raid dmg when possible. I was skeptical of hl spammers until I started to draw close to 30k mana raid buffed. Now Im close to 35k raid buffed and beleive me it's far less punishing to HL and now in raids I'm pushing 8 to almost 9k HPS during heavy raid damage. Some times I'll be close to oom at the end of a fight with no tricks left but that's kinda know how you're doing your job

Until you are really comfortable with your mana, using the lvl 200 Libram helps a lot. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40705

go 51/20/0 rather than the spec you are. pick up divine guardian and get imp devo aura. if you already run with a prot pally throw 3 points in imp conc. replace the SP gem in your belt with an int one. also on most fights you should probably use the libram that decreases the mana cost of your HL rather than increasing the SP. other than that you look ok.

I have 4pc t9, Pandora's Plea, and the Relentless Libram. I want to say (tank dependent) that I can crit a FoL for around 8k, maybe a little more. As soon as I get another cloak I'm considering putting the SP enchant on my cloak.

Well, we use beacon too. And our cooldowns. And Judge/Melee hits.

... But we dont (our shouldnt) use FoL.

honestly, if a paladin has to do anything but bandage other people then he needs to l2p, people without bandaging skill are ruining the game for hardcore raiders
