Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

    How important is it?

Mages got 80 to all resis with mage armor on iirc?

    Paladins got 130.

I see many priests going for 130. But how important is this, as it's basically only good against paladins?

    AND

Is spell pene than every other stat until you got it capped (for example, 27 sp vs 35 spell pene, whats better)?

Re: Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

Definately depends how offensive you're playing.. But I'm at 75 atm and think I'm gonna go for more...
Fear resists, dispel resists and so on just screw with your plan too much

Groups with druids also have Gift of the Wild, but that can be purged/dispelled. That will only give 76 resistance though, so at bare minimum you should shoot for that.

If you're low on spell pen, I'd definitely say 35spell pen > 27 SP

Ok thanks for the replies guys but I haven't quite gotten any good answer on my question yet.

Motw WILL be dispelled, but I saw many priests going for 75 ..

Do mages use the resistance armor often?

    Do you often meet paladins?

Re: Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

Speaking from a mage PoV, Ice Armor is used much more frequently. However, in 2s against a caster team, a mage will switch to Mage Armor.

As far as the paladin question, I'm somewhat ignorant to priest vs pally battles so I'll leave that one alone.

And most mages will actually get to 120 resistance if they have Mage Armor up. 80 from http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=29444 and 40 from http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=43024

    I see, I see

So in 2s, me playing mp, I can expect mages to go Mage Armor.

And in 3s? When I play rmp? I guess not, right?
Is the arena top ladder populated with paladins a lot or?

Re: Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

Since you won't dispel every possible buff from every possible opponent, you (most likely) won't get shadow protection off of them or gift of the wild. Hence, you go for 130 spell penetration to be sure every fear you have will land and won't get resisted.
So it's a stat you go for if you expect to fight priest, paladin or a druid. It's a rarity to encounter teams without any of these so you should go for 130 penetration.

Re: Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

Other than against an all caster setup, mages will use Ice Armor. So against an RMP, a mage will use Ice Armor. It also increases your frost resistance by 60 when talented so that kicks up your frost resistance to 140. That's why mage vs mage battles can be rather slow paced.

Paladins are strong in all brackets, but I think their weakest is in 2s. Expect to face your fair chunk

Re: Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

The only remaining question I'm having is:

How valuable is spell pene until you're capped?

Many people say it's better to get the 27 sp cloak enchant than to get the 35 spell pene. This confuses me.

Re: Disc - importancy of being spell pene capped

if you aren't spell pen capped, your fear can and will be "resisted" (miss, basically), and also dispel magic is a shadow based spell that can be resisted (miss)

that's the main thing, for disc, going against UD is tough enough since they can train you for over 1 minute without you being able to get away in arena (racial + trinket) but missing a fear can lose the match

there are no holy resists so offensively with the holy spells, no difference, but SWP, SWD, PS, dispel magic and MB are all shadow based and lots of classes can resist that

What kind of mage uses Ice Armour in a 1v1 with another mage

A frost mage will. Fire and Arcane wont. Also alot of mages are armor dancing with certain incoming spells.

    Not realy no.
When people say "pls" just because its shorter then "please", I feel totally justified to say "No" just because its shorter then "Yes".

Dispell Magic is actually in the Holy School NOT shadow as you state, so it is not susceptible to shadow resist or helped by spell pen.
