Thread: [Music] Metal

Say what you will, but I have never liked the throwing up your guts sound that goes in a lot of modern metal. I was born in the mid 70's so I grew up with Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and the such and I have always liked a band that has a singing singer. I do love, absolutely love the heavy rifts many of the "gut tossing" bands have, but once they start in with that I have to stop the song. I can handle some, like In This Moment is a fav of mine, Otep, etc. Any suggestions on some bands with hard, heavy rifts that have actual singing in them?

Enjoy it anyway! Same as with the previous one, not the mastered version, but should do the trick regardless. Oh, and what you're hearing is not a cello. It's an electric bass guitar on which a cello bow has been used to new and exciting effect

So hey I finally listened to it. I think the intro sort of fell over with the mini-blast-beats tossed in with the almost tribal drumming going on. I would have preferred a more simply percussive section before you lead into the first verse, then probably some sort of fill that then slams you with the faster drumming. Other than that the only thing I'd say might be missing is a bit more atmospherics in the bridge section.

I find this band to be an excellent choice when I want to get rid of my rage. Actually, this band is always an excellent choice.

^I'll be honest, didn't like any of that. But then again, to each their own.

Blasphemy, nobody is allowed to dislike Alcest!

Oh and here's the only tech-death I can take seriously. They don't hide the noodling and wankery with a half-assed attempt at writing songs.

Plus the bass player crafted his own 10 string bass. Legit.

    Ok where do I start...
Basically I love all genres of music, hip hop, black metal, pop, classical, im a music lover. But my favorite top 10 are:

    1. I killed the Prom Queen. Aussie band, been around for more than a decade, best hardcore band this country has ever seen (yes Parkway are more successful but not as good, imho). They just have so much soul, especially there original CD and the 2nd release EP. They made my teen years extremely exciting and always found listening to them made me escape the realities of how fucked up the world was for me at the time.

    2. Kalmah. Finland has the best metal bands hands down.

    3. Ensiferum. Same as above.

    4. Moonsorrow. ^

    5. Amon Amarth. Sweden comes in 2nd trololol.

    6. Agalloch. US black metal, amazing and love them to bits.

    7. Black Dahlia Murder

    8. Darkest Hour

    9. Dark Tranquility

    10. Kamelot

Probably the best list any mere mortal could conjure up. If you havnt heard them, youtube them or even buy there stuff.

Well, that Alcest song struck me as fairly bland. Not something intolerable that makes me wanna stop the song, but not something that makes me want to go buy it or hear more, either(and also not nearly interesting enough to justify it's 9 minute length). As for the tech death...I don't LIKE noodling and wankery that's just noodling and wankery. If you can't write a SONG to go with your playing, your skills mean nothing to me. That's the reason so much of Malmsteen's work is boring, cause it's all just flashy guitar for the sake of flashy guitar, with no regard for writing an actual song. Axel Rudi Pell plays just as well as Yngwie, but he can write songs as well as solos.

That Buck Satan song was a fascinating listen. Not something I'd actually want to listen to per se, but fascinating to hear.

Yes, and that album in particular. Prefer it to City even. Not a fan of the later stuff. He started mixing Strapping and the Devy stuff and both became weaker for it. Glad he took full vengeance with the last four albums though. Not saying that Synchestra or Alien (or worse, The New Black) are bad albums because there's good songs on them. But you can hear he was getting fed up and it's not nearly as consistently mind blowing as the stuff before.

Went to the Zimmer's Hole / Devin Townsend / Strapping Young Lad show and was first amused, then blown away, then ground to pieces. SYL was a veritable steam roller live. They started off stupendously fast with a massive neckbreaker and instead of letting up at some point just kept increasing the impact throughout the set until they were done. Relentless, absolutely relentless.

    ^That is surprisingly good.

The only that strikes me as odd is the name of the band.... i'm not sure i understand it as it is supposed to >_<

What, SYL? You're supposed to take it firmly tongue-in-cheek as goes for most of Devin Townsend's stuff.

    sorry i don't understand that ''firmly tongue-in-cheek''

    But the band is good.

Also, on your band, it really isn't my ''type'' of metal, though i could see people that dig that style enjoying the music you guys got going on. I would comment further on it but i would probably just embarass myself because of my lack of English skills

'Tongue In Cheek' means it's not entirely serious. A strapping young lad is a... well, one way of saying it would be "a male that has a sturdy muscular physique; robust." Take a look at Devin's posture and hair-do and you can see why it's more than a bit of self-mockery.

And feel free to comment more - I don't mind

Yeah, Blackgaze is definitely not a user-friendly genre. Even though it's easy to listen to in the sense that there isn't much in the way of dissonance and overall heavy atmosphere, the shoegaze elements and focus on repetition (especially with the post-rock influence on some songs) is an acquired taste rather than something people can get into after one song. I've found there's usually a litmus test -- if you find that you enjoy Agalloch, generally speaking you can enjoy Alcest.

As far as Tech Death goes, I just haven't heard anything that warrants all the technicality so far. It's weird because as far as playing goes, I'm one of those guys that plays almost nothing but classical guitar because of how much more difficult it is than any of the lightning fast, reverb'd out electric guitar leads out there. I just don't really like it in Death Metal. I rather enjoy it if it's done well in Metalcore, but not Death Metal.

And now it's time for Meth Drinker.

    Video probably isn't SFW.
