Mine would be Synyster Gates, guitarist of Avenged Sevenfold. His skill and speed is incredible, especially in the solo he does in Afterlife and also Dancing Dead. Though there are others those are probably his best.

those two are my tops then there are others i also like alot like Dimebag, Buckethead, Adrian Smith, Rob Flynn (he isnt lead but he kicks ass), Mark Morton, Mick Thompson..... damn so many they all have different styles its hard to choose my favourites =)

John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai.. IMO Best contemporary lead guitarrists alive right now.

But Jimmy Page is my all time favorite.

There is a lot of good guitarists out there. Honestly from personal preference i love Mark Knopflers style of guitar playing although it remains to be more bluesy. Petrucci and Satriani are very good guitarists also.
Dimebag darrell has one of the nicer half step/d standard sounds from his playing

Once you have heard a Kirk Hammet solo tho looking at any other solo he has played be it from Kill em all or Justice for all you tend to get sick of the same scale and repetitiveness of it. Anyone else got mixed up when playing Welcome home sanitarium, fade to black and nothing else matters solos as they are too similiar in a lot of ways?

that is so true, and you forgot Master of Puppets and One... exact same things basically but still they allways fit perfectly into the song, the solo in The Day That Never Comes is a great example of that, thats one of the main reasons i like Kirk Hammet alot... and his live Blues Improvisations =)

I was drunk as hell, laughed my ass off at the lyrics and was awed at the guitar/vocal sync.

Respect to all the influential guitarists from any genre, though.
If it wasn't for them, these guys wouldn't be as good as they are.

He's got skill and can make the guitar really sing. His solos at live shows are always an eargasm to me.

And when John and Flea decide to jam out (like in the live recording above), GOD DAMN.

Too bad he isn't with the Chili Peppers anymore...

As for single lead guitarists, I'd have to say Paul Gilbert. For bands that have two, though, I think KK Downing and Glenn Tipton are completely unbeatable. The have a way of trading licks and solos that sounds absolutely amazing.
