    Best mastery for alchemy?

Just levelled alchemy on an alt, and was wondering what is the best mastery? Transmute looks imo very good with a lot of potential gem+metas procs. Although the same i suppose could be said for elixir. Im soo confused need some input ^^

    Want to PvP? Potion
    Want to Raid? Elixir
Want to make money? Transmutation (Elixir can be comparable)

    A little note about transmutation.
I have 4 transmutation specialized alchemists and for the past two weeks I had an extreme streak of unluck. During that time epic gems procced only TWICE, both times for x2, that makes like two times out of ~56 attempts. Well, free gold is free anyway, currently leveling two more alchemists. Transmuting metas and cutting them still gets you a fair share of gold.

Huh? It's not that clearcut, especially between the first 2 options. In a 4 hour raid you use 3-4 flasks, 1-2 if you have mixology (that comes from herbalism not from alchemy though, right?). But potions, damn, potions. As a shadowpriest I usually go through (depending on if we do the first or latter half of ICC) 10-30 wild magic/speed potions per night. So having my alt be potion spec really helps there.

Mixology comes from Alchemy, lifeblood comes from herbalism.

Yeah. Either Transmute or Elixer is the most money. Elixer does also have it;s major PVE benefits too. I currently have 3 Tranmute Masters and 1 Elixer Master. And I am considering making my main a Elixer Master too. Gem procs are much rarer then Elixer procs, but when you get lucky, you get lucky

I had a 4 proc on Cardinal Ruby one day and I loved it. If you have an army of Transmute masters it's nice. IE, I get at least 4 epic gems a day, for around 60g on mats? I make around 450g on those, so I am making quite a profit per day as you can understand. And that is without any procs, and when I get my main too, I will be mkaing anywhere up to 500-600g a day for about 15 mins work.

In my view it depends on your servers economy.

Potion master : Some servers have very few people listing things like wild magic, speed pots and to a lesser extent Mana pots. This can make it more profitable due to less competition. You'll still get procs but unless you have can get a high turnover on the pots this wont always make as much money as flasks (but it's free!).

Elixir/Flask Master : There's always good sales on flasks but on my server the mats usually cost slightly more than the flasks they make so you only make money if/when you proc. That said, when you do it's very nice.

Transmute : You have a 20hrs CD here on epic gem transmutes so your limited to 1 chance per day of a proc unlike the other 2. Obviously the best money maker WHEN it does though. The other thing here which is good though is transmute titanium which is now off the CD, so if there a high demands for titansteel you can usually sell titanium bars pretty easily if you can make/buy the saronite bars cheap enough.

Which is best is upto you, are you fealing lucky, do you have a JC, miner or Herbilist? They all have a fair potential to make money but how much boils down to different servers economies.

This is a function of being an alchemist, not the specialty.

If you want to make money, i'd say transmuting wins out over elixirs in the end, though transmuting is more susceptible to bad RNG. If you have a JC then transmute wins by a greater amount. Don't forget to do al ot of the transmutes that are off the transmute cooldown though, and only ever make cardinal rubies.

Elixir mastery is great for keeping costs down and being of benefit to your raid. the profit margin between frost lotus (bought) and flasks can get pretty thin at times, so you really want to buy in bulk whenever it gets low, or you spot a bargain. Without doing this it can be hard to make money if you are raiding alot, or keeping your guildies stocked up in cost price flasks.

Potion mastery is shit. :( I got it to help out my guild in BC when we could and should chug mana pots at every CD, and when that was the case it was possibly to make a little money off it. Now though, i find not enough people use haste/wild magic pots (or even mana pots for healers) every fight for there to be much market for potions. Smart guildies who do use them will love you when it comes time for them to find an alchemist to make their next 20stack, but apart from that you're really doing yourself a disservice if you take Potion mastery.

Elixir master quadruples your flask duration with a 2 proc, quintuples your flask duration with a 4 proc and sixteenquples (didnt know the proper word for x16 ) your flask duration with an 8 proc.

If you make craft 2 flasks and get an 8 proc, you will have 16 flasks, instead of a 4 hour flask duration (which you get from 2 x 1 hour flasks) you will have just made yourself 32 hours worth of flasks just from 1 x frost lotus.

32 hours of raiding flasks for yourself from 1 x frost lotus can only be achieved with elixir mastery.
But the amount of increase is still only a factor equal to the proc. A 2x proc only doubles what you would get anyway. It gives you quadruple what a non alchemist would get but only double what a potion master would get so when considering which specialty to take its inaccurate to say elix master gives you a 4x bonus on a 2x proc because we're comparing it to an alchemist of another mastery.

Yeah Wooshiewoo, you make it sound like there is some how a double bonus for being an elixir specialist, you even use the term 'double win'. There's only the single win - more elixir's proc. That's all elixir mastery gives you. Your first post is more than a little misleading.

If you are lazy and don't have a lot of time to play with the AH, then transmute is right for you.

If you raid and have time to play the AH, then it's a tossup between elixir and potion but I would probably say go with elixir. It also depends quite a bit on your server economy and how much competition there is on your server.

    Re: Best mastery for alchemy?

I went transmute. My guild supplies flasks/potions I need for raiding, and I supply gems for my upgrades or to sell.

I used to be elixir, but then the prices on flasks tanked and it was more cost effective to just go transmute.

    Re: Best mastery for alchemy?

The best thing is probably to level up enough alts to have all three of them. I have elixir and transmute right now and maybe I'll get the third one with some alt at a later date.

Potion mastery isn't worth it as much as it was since you have the 1 pot per fight BS now, I find Mute mastery to be a great source of income, I have 3 mute masters now, and 1 flask.

    Re: Best mastery for alchemy?

Well, starting off making gold with Alchemy you should be Transmutation, as it's basically free gold.
Once you get around 2-3k gold, I suggest you change spec and get Elixir master and get Mat's for Flasks.
Make the Flask's that sell for the most, Flask of Endless Rage and Flask of the Frost Wyrm, and put them on the Auction house at peak raiding times, normally 7:00pm - 11:00pm, for 12 hours each.

You will make a significant amount of gold if you stick at this.

Always before you check make sure that 2x Flasks will sell for at least 10-15g less than the mats(If the mats cost around 20-30g don't bother making them, wait for the prices to drop on mats).
