Ah got ya. I heard that was because of the toll the cancer treatments were taking on him. It was a really interesting vocal performance, almost like a cross between a high power metal scream (ala Halford or Ripper) with a mid/upper range growl. I tend more towards stuff that isn't super low. Part of why I like Orphaned Land's growls so much I guess. They are in that sorta mid range area as well (though less power metal influenced than the vocals on TSOP).

I'm really depressed we never got a second Control Denied album, there were moments of brilliance in the first one but it didn't quite come together. I have a feeling the second one would have been something special.

The lack of Devin Townsend in this thread makes me a sad panda /nod

Russell Allen, Warrel Dane, Jorn Lande, James Labrie ...

Warrel Dane is simply amazing, such raw power in his voice that spreads over 5-6 octaves

Christian Älvestam (Ex-Scar Symmetry). It's enough to say that the band had to recruit two singers to replace him.

Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) sadly he quit, and Warrel Dane from Nevermore. Anyone who hasn't heard Warrel Dane, check out some Nevermore tracks and you'll know what I mean. The guy has an insane reach.

James Hetfield during mid 80s-early 90s, unbeatable! http://youtu.be/Lx35VGSxe4I

King Diamond. Somewhat difficult to get into, when I first heard him singing together with Metallica I thought damn, he's ruining the song. But after listening some more I started liking it more and more, has an amazing range. http://youtu.be/HqcOVzx4CqY

Ronnie James Dio The little man with the big voice, taken far too early. http://youtu.be/FqYrO03RyUs

    Serj Tankian http://youtu.be/k3WSnlP1Ijs

And plenty others that I personally really like, but that I wouldn't really consider great singers, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth for example. Pretty bad voice actually, especially live these days. But fits the music perfectly.

Trevor Strnad (The black dahlia murder) and Peter Dolving (The Haunted) stand out as excellent vocalists to me.
